Mr. Gallagher retired from the Navy in 1970 and continued on a long and successful career with Computer Sciences Corp. as a systems analyst and program manager.
In 1941, he graduated early from Boston Latin School to take a job with New England and Telephone and Telegraph Co. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942, starting active duty in 1943 and earning his wings as a pilot in 1944.
His tour in the Navy took him around the world before he finally settled in Alexandria Va. He commanded cargo and passenger aircraft until the end of World War II. He went on to fly patrol planes, serve as a flight instructor and worked under the Chief of Naval operations in software development at the Pentagon.
He earned degrees from George Washington University while in the Navy and Computer Sciences Corp. He retired from CSC in 1990.
Mr. Gallagher was an avid tennis player and loved to play golf. If he wasn't working through the daily crossword, he was reading one of the hundreds of books on his bookshelves and in his Kindle.
In retirement, he spent winters in Estero on the West Coast of Florida.
Mr. Gallagher is pre-deceased by his wife Helen Elkins Gallagher and daughter Mary Alice McKinney. He is survived by Mary Alice's husband James McKinney and their children Paul and Lee;
his daughter, Paula Gallagher Robertson, her husband, Tom and their children Jennifer Zwolinski and her husband Jake, and Rachel; his daughter Patricia Gallagher Morris, her husband Rob and their children John Dabney and Libbie; his daughter Ann Gallagher Swift, her husband Tom and their children Emilie White and her husband Patrick, Zachary and Nathan.
Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, Alexis, Marek, Helena, Caleb and Annie and longtime friend Shirley Prevost.
Friends may call the Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 where the family will be present on Thursday, March 5th from 6-8:00pm and on Friday, March 6th from 10-11:00am at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, March 6, 2015 at 11:00am at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mt. Vernon Highway, Alexandria, VA 22309. Interment with Full Military Honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
