Of Alexandria, VA, passed away on March 26th, 2021 in Washington DC from a courageous battle with cancer. Jane is survived by her husband of 40 years Christopher J. Freitas; her children, Adam (Bethany) Freitas, Alyson Freitas, and Andrew (Cara) Freitas; seven siblings; and many more family and friends.
Jane was the Deputy Librarian for Library Services and Collections and the 25th Law Librarian of Congress. She has led the Law Library since 2017 and led the Library’s Humanities and Social Sciences division from 2014 to 2017. She has also served as a business unit managing director at the U.S. Government Publishing Office; as an associate director of Justice Libraries, Justice Management Division, U.S. Department of Justice; as departmental head of History and Culture Libraries at the Smithsonian Institution Libraries; and as an acquisitions manager for electronic databases at BNA, Inc., a journalistic organization, in addition to library work at Harvard University and the University of New Mexico.
The family will receive friends and visitors on April 14th, 2021 from 12-2 PM at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mt. Vernon Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22309, with the Catholic Mass of Christian Burial being held at 2 PM. The service will be Livestreamed by the church for those unable to attended.
