Obituary of David Bruce Simmons

IN THE CARE OF

Demaine Funeral Home

Dave passed away peacefully on February 19, 2022 at his home in Alexandria, Virginia with Carol, his wife of 46 years, and his daughter Samantha by his side. He was born on May 10, 1953 in Norfolk, Virginia and grew up as a Navy “brat” moving around from East coast to West coast and to Japan. Dave was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Melanoma in February 2017 and was treated at the Georgetown University Lombardi Cancer Center these past five years. In addition to his wife and daughter, Dave is survived by his brother, Eric Simmons, of Ellenton, Florida and his sister, Jan Rhudy, of Henderson, Texas along with 5 nephews, 1 niece and 16 great nieces and nephews. Always extroverted and social, Dave lived the five years after his diagnosis full of life and “Relentlessly Positive”. His happiest times were spent with family and friends, fishing, following Nationals baseball, smoking ribs on the grill, watching “really bad” martial arts & action movies and sitting on a beach reading. Forever an avid reader, he favored everything from Sci-Fi and Fantasy to serious fiction/non-fiction to trashy detective and spy novels. Dave loved his lifelong career in construction project management, spending the last 18 years working for Savills Inc., an international commercial real estate tenant advisory firm. He truly considered his Savills co-workers and the multitude of architects, designers, contractors, engineers and trades people on his projects, as friends. Carol and Samantha would like to give special thanks to Dave’s cancer care team at Lombardi and to the Capital Caring Hospice staff who helped both Dave and our family through all of this. Dave, we will forever hold you in our hearts and thoughts. We are planning to have a Celebration of Dave’s life in late March/early April when the weather is warm, flowers are in bloom and we can all gather outside. To help preserve and protect Dave’s favorite fishing spot in the marshes and back creeks of the tidal tributaries around Hoopers Island, MD (the one place he was always relaxed and stress-free), memorial donations may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
