Mrs. Cassie Lou (Hinton) Reid was born in Lansing, Michigan on January 1, 1936, in her mother’s home. She was two months premature and they thought she wasn’t going to survive the night. When she burped, her grandmother said, “Get her to the hospital!” The hospital gave her the legal birthdate of January 2, 1936. Her parents were James and Grace (Brown) Hinton. Cassie was the third of seven children. Her mother, Grace, divorced James and later married William Demps.
Cassie was educated through the Lansing Public Schools. She attended J.W. Sexton until her senior year. She met Joseph Harold Reid, Jr. during a skating party where she told his brother, Dicky, to tell him she only had eyes for him. They married April 19, 1953 and moved to Albion, Michigan. In those days, it was not uncommon for young newlyweds to move in with the in-laws. Nell and Joe, Harold’s parents, were also raising their grandson, Dennis Reid. In their first year of marriage, her father-in-law, Joseph Reid died from a heart attack. Harold purchased the home from this mother, Nelzean Reid, who continued to live with them until her death in 1969.
Cassie was a homemaker and helped Harold with his ownership of a local tavern called, The Paramount Lounge, which they owned for several years. After Harold retired in 1996, they enjoyed going to the casino with friends. From their union of marriage, they had three daughters, Sandra who resides in Chicago, IL, Nell who resides in Albion, MI, and April who resides in Lansing, MI. They were married for 59 years until Harold passed away in 2012 from Leukemia. After the death of her husband, she stayed with her daughter in Lansing, going to Bingo every day. In her final four years, she rotated on a monthly basis between her daughters.
Cassie’s health began to decline in May of 2022, when she was placed in hospice. However, having her feisty personality, she survived for another two years, and was removed from hospice care. During her last two weeks of life, there was a quick decline in her health and she was placed back in hospice where she passed away on October 26, 2024.
Other family members who preceded her in death include: her father, James (Lucille) Hinton; mother, Grace (William) Demps; brother, James (Barbara) Hinton; sister, Christine (QT) Lewis; sister, Barbara Jean Hinton, and brother, John Hinton.
