He graduated from the University of Rochester where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and also the Rochester Glee Club that won the national glee club contest sponsored by Fred Waring. The prize was a trip to New York to perform in Carnegie Hall and a trip to Washington D.C. to perform in the East Room of the White House.
He spent four years in the Pacific during World War II and was scheduled to take part in the invasion of Japan where they dropped the bomb.
Returning home he obtained a law degree at Case Western Reserve Law School before joining the Howell-Viggers Corporation in the Commercial Sales Division.
He learned to play golf at the age of six at the old Silver Lake Country Club along with this mother who was the Ladies Champion. He enjoyed many years of golfing at the new Silver Lake Country Club and The Congress Lake Club.
Newt leaves behind his wife, Dorothy, of sixty-seven years; three children Pam Vellmore (Charlie), Dr. James Thomas, and Nancy Thomas; three grandchildren Christina, Hiller, and Heath Thomas.
The family wishes to thank the Northeast Ohio Helpers and the staff and Hospice of Ohio Living for their wonderful care during his last years.
