Saddened to read of Carl’s passing; after 1978 I left Florida and lost all contact with the Class of 1964 so stumbling across such news was unexpected.

I “loved” Carl.  He was ALWAYS so kind.  And he was FUNNY.  Very witty.  Charming.  Never once in the two years at Copley High that I saw Carl frequently did he ever let his pain affect his ways.  May he now rest pain free.

I had the privilege of teaching with Carl for fourteen years at Brunswick High School.  He was an EXCELLENT chemistry teacher and fine human being.  Carl had a great sense of humor.  It was sad watching him battle his health problems, but he always made the best of the situation.  He never complained.  Rest in peace.

I was lucky to be a student of Carl's at OLE in 1973. He was such a good teacher and a kind, patient man. Our prayers are with him and the entire family.

I was privileged and fortunate to teach with Carl during his years at Brunswick High School.  He was a brilliant, professional, and compassionate man.  I could go to him when my chemistry background was lacking,and he always cheerfully explained the answer to my questions without making me feel embarrassed.  In spite of his crippling disease which must have caused him much pain, he had the bravest, optimistic spirit, and never lost his sense of humor.  The world is a lesser place without him, but many lives are richer for having known him.  My deepest sympathy to his family. I, among his many friends and former colleagues, are grieving, too.

585. I type in Carl Bauman, hit Search, and that's the number of email messages that come up, stretching back to late 2008. And I think, "Dear Carl, I calculate that we have communicated with each other over the past seven-plus years, on average, once every five days." And I imagine Carl responding, "My dear math-challenged Wayne, strictly speaking, your calculation incorrectly gives equal weight to original messages, replies and mere copied-in messages sent to others; the correct average frequency of communication is more likely in the once weekly range." To which I think, "Heir Bauman, Redundancy Alert! You are German and you ALWAYS speak strictly." I wait. No response. For once, I have the final word. I don't want it...

We love to play with balls (Carl would like the obvious bawdiness of that) - footballs, tennis balls, bowling balls, golf balls, baseballs, soccer balls, basketballs. Carl's condition forced him to drop the balls (he would like that wordplay, too) a long time ago. In their place, he tossed around words, sending out perfect jewels of messages containing puns, syllogisms, portmanteau words, paraprisdokians (!) to those fortunate enough to be on his Contacts list. Best club I ever belonged to. Only club I never wanted to leave...

Carl was the most intelligent person I knew. He knew something about everything, and generally a lot more. I often wondered what it would be like not to know someone smarter than yourself. Carl knew the answer to that one too.

Carl and I shared a favorite high school teacher - Blaine Garretson. For many years, I used Garretson as my online password. I told Carl that he was no doubt the Mr Garretson for hundreds of his former students. Students who, if they read this, will be scrambling to change their passwords from Bauman...students who owe Carl a debt that can only be paid forward...

Carl was ferociously competitive, endlessly curious, and seriously funny. Gunter, Becky, Karen, Pat, Jane, Gene, Al, and so many others had their lives and their minds enriched every time Carl popped up in their Inbox. 

Two days ago I read an online article about a surprising feature of prime numbers (numbers ending in 1, 3, 7 or 9, which are only divisible by 1 or themselves, but, of course, Carl would know that and at least two more interesting prime number properties) and I immediately went to press the Share icon only to realize that the only person in the whole world I wanted to share that with wouldn't receive it. I choked up and wiped my eyes. Hard. Again.

Carl, what I want to say - no, my dear fellow agnostic friend, what I want to pray - is that for once in your too short life you were wrong, and we will have the chance, somehow, somewhere, to once again Share with one another...

It was 1954.  My family had just moved to a sleepy hamlet with gravel and tar roads called Fairlawn.  My parents put me on a rattling bus and sent me off to an old brown building called Copley School.  I timidly walked into my new 4th grade classroom and met a tall, lanky kid named Carl Bauman.  And so it began, an entire lifetime of a close, lasting, bonding  friendship that would inform and enrich both of us.  We played, we grew, we learned and in turn we became educators.  

Carl became the consummate teacher.  He was a natural.  His intellect, his demeanor, his respect for his students and fellow teachers grew with each year in a very distinguished career.  At Our Lady of the Elms High School and Brunswick High School, I saw first hand the way students and staff responded to Carl, and the respect, gratitude, and yes, affection he engendered.

As my close friend, he was a companion and competitor.  Unrivaled at chess and bowling, I usually found myself taking lessons.  His German stoic lust for life always captured and enriched any moments we shared to such an extent that I didn't mind losing (well, maybe a little).

If Carl were here, he would probably say "Cut it short Al, so we can raise a glass to a life well-lived in the face of great odds.  And in that moment he is once again the consummate teacher.

Sorry to hear this news....I had Mr. Bauman for chemistry and AP chemistry at BHS (class of 92). I went on to become a science teacher and while I liked him then, I truly appreciate how good he was at his job now that I know that world.....sorry for your loss.

Mr. Bauman will always be remembered. He was my Chemistry teacher at Brunswick High School. He always made learing fun. From his sarcasm to his humor he truly engaged with the students. I commended him for facing each day with the pain he experienced from the arthritis. I have thought about him through the years. Nice to see he lead such a full life. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends!

My sincere condolences go out to the family.  Carl was in every one of my classes from eighth grade through graduation in 1964 at Copley High School.  He was a huge intellect, an analytical and critical thinker, and someone whose character and opinion I always respected.  I remember sitting behind him in Algebra class and seeing him massage his hands and his knees every day.  His endurance and courage in the face of a lifetime of painful health problems was amazing. One of the BEST, Most Entertaining Teachers I ever had.  Mr. Bauman (Carl) knew how to keep idiot kids, (like me) interested in what he was teaching.  And he also let us be goofs.  He was FUN.  RIP, MR. Bauman!  Oh Chemistry....Oh Chemistry...I proudly sing that hymn to my 15 year daughter.
