January 2, 1927 – August 8, 2019
Paul passed away peacefully on August 8, 2019 in his ninety-third year, surrounded by his family members at his cherished lakeside home in Acton, Ontario. Paul was born January 2, 1927, in Fredericia, Denmark, the seventh of nine children. He graduated from commercial school in 1945, and immigrated to Canada in 1951. Paul initially settled in Georgetown, Ontario where he became the proud father of three children (Mark, Lynn and Kent), and later grandfather of five (Erik, Taylor, Kevin, Andrea, Karen) and great-grandfather of two (Kaia, Ella). Paul opened a clothing store in nearby Acton and relocated there with his family in 1960. Paul shared much of his life with three beloved women (Ella, Eva and Jennie), each of whom he ultimately lost to cancer. Paul operated Nielsen’s Clothing store (formerly Paul’s Mens and Boys Wear and Paulette Fashions) in Acton for 38 years until his retirement. During this time he was very active in the community, with many accomplishments including building of the Industrial Park and development of the Danville and Somerville subdivisions. Paul was President of the Acton Chamber of Commerce for four years and Chairman of the Acton Development Commission for 10 years. Paul also served as a guest lecturer in small business operations at the University of Guelph in 1973. Paul was an accomplished rower in his youth and an active scuba diver for forty years. He leveraged his skills to save several people from drowning during his lifetime, and received a citation for valuable assistance (presented to him by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario) from the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem the Priory of Canada in 1972. Paul was generous with his time and resources and provided regular help and support to many people over the years. Paul lived a full and colourful life, and will be dearly missed by his family and close friends. Special thanks from his family to Paul’s close friend Ron for his friendship and aid during Paul’s last few years, and to his amazing caregivers Beverley and Susie for their dedicated and loving care and support.
As per Paul’s wishes no formal funeral service will be held. A private family service and interment will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Research Society would be appreciated.
