Shirley Glandon, age 82, of Abilene, Texas passed away on Monday April 9, 2018. A visitation will be held Friday, April 13, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Wylie United Methodist Church, 3430 Antilley Road, with interment following at Elmwood Memorial Park.
Shirley was born April 21, 1935 in McLean, Texas to Norman and Della Glenn. After graduating from Canyon High School she attended Business College. Shirley and her husband Roger were married on October 22, 1954.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and husband Roger; sister Norma Burt; and brother Bill Glenn.
Shirley is survived by sons Don N. Glandon and R. Scott Glandon; daughter Sidney Hiser; brother Jim Glenn; grandchildren Lynette Wyatt and husband Mark, Nathan Glandon, Austin Hiser and wife Chrysta, Sarah Hester and husband Doug; and great-granddaughter Molly Nell Hester. Shirley was the matriarch of her family who loved, adored, and aspired to be more like her. Her loss will be felt deeply by all who knew and loved her.
Shirley dedicated her life to serving others and participated in many volunteer councils including the Volunteer Services Council for the Abilene State Supported Living Center as Council Chairman, the Volunteer Services State Council as Vice-Chairman, and the Board of Directors of the Mental Health Association in Abilene. She also served on the committee to establish the Rape Crisis Center in Abilene, and volunteered there in many capacities from 1977 to present. Shirley was a Member of the Citizens Planning Advisory Committee to the Board of the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, and as a member of the Mental Health Services Planning Council. She was a member of the league of Women Voters for 13 years and served as Second Vice President, Voters Service Director, and Board Member. Shirley was a Member of the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee, West Central Council of Governments, from 1997 to present.
Her extensive volunteer work led her to be named "Volunteer of the Year" in 1980 by the Abilene Rape Crisis Center, "Citizen of the Year" in 1981 by the Mental Health Association in Abilene, "Volunteer of the Year" in 1982 for the Abilene State Supported Living Center. She received the Commissioner's Award for Volunteer Service by the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation in 1990, Dedicated Service Award from the Abilene Mental Health Association in 1993, J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award in 1995, WTU Vision Award in 1998, and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 by the Volunteer Services Council of the ASSLC.
