He was born on November 8, 1936 in Santa Anna, Texas to Curtis and Madelyn McDougal Burkett.
Phil was an avid Abilene Eagles fan and a member of the great class of ’55 Abilene High. He spent the majority of his life in the Abilene area after having been raised by his aunt and uncle Caddy and Rocky Johnson whom he truly considered Mom and Dad. He was a devout Christian who prayed harder and made sure to teach his family the words of God even at the kitchen table.
He met and married the love of his life Miss Mary Sue Warnell on February 14, 1957 and spent over 64 blissful years raising his family. He spent 30 years as a letter carrier serving his community one whistled tune at a time. He was also elected 3 terms as the area Constable spending 12 years protecting and serving his community.
As an Eagles fan he didn’t miss a game for over 25 years, making sure to watch all his grandchildren’s games while also serving on the Booster Club. In his spare time when he wasn’t working or teaching his family all the wonders of God he enjoyed many family activities and going RVing. He was also a member of the Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship and of the Kiwana’s Club of Abilene. While he will be greatly missed by all that loved him, his great-grandson Jett said it best “Dad-Dad is in heaven now”.
Phil is survived by his wife Mary Sue Burkett of Abilene and by his children Vicki Johnson and husband Wayne of Quinlan, Brad Burkett and wife Tammy of Midland, and Blake Burkett and wife Julie of Hoisington Kansas, as well as by his grandchildren Megan Walker and husband Bryson, Brady Burkett, Lauren Burkett, Eric MCKissack and wife Kami, Chad Johnson and wife Lynn, Justus Burkett, and Nicholas Johnson, and by great-grandchildren Breydon Walker, Rylee Wright, Jett Walker, Jackson Walker, Kody Mckissack, Kyleigh Mckissack, Kole Johnson, Trystinn Johnson, and Bryce Burkett. He is also survived by his cousin Jim Hall and his wife Jana Beth of Weatherford and by a special daughter in love Suzan Burkett.
He was preceded in death by his biological parents Curtis and Madelyn Burkett and by his mom and dad Caddy and Rocky Johnson.
