Melvin Glenndon "JJ" Johnson, 65 of Abilene,Texas departed his Earthly home to be with the Lord. After a courageous battle with cancer Melvin passed away in his home surrounded by his love ones. Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Saturday, April 21, 2018 in the Elliott-Hamil Chapel of Faith, 5701 Hwy 277 South. The family will receive friends for a visitation from 6 to 8pm Friday evening at the funeral home.
Melvin was the third child of Oysbie and Louise Johnson. Melvin accepted Christ into his heart at an early age he was member at New Salem Baptist Church. Melvin attended Warren County High School where he graduated in 1971. Melvin excelled at football and basketball. He was among the first African American student athletes to take his high school to state championship in both football and basketball. He was a HomeTown hero! Melvin was in the band at his high school and played the saxophone. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served for 13 years as a staff sergeant loadmaster for the 772nd Tactical airlift Squadron. Melvin worked at the Abilene State school until he retired 24 years later. He later returned to work at the Goodwill of Abilene.
Melvin love working on his yard and going fishing he had a great love for jazz music and barbecuing. Melvin had a very positive attitude and liked helping others Melvin loved and took very good care of his wife. Melvin loved traveling and being out in nature he was very detailed and organized in his life he planned out every moment of his life early and he knew what he wanted to be successful.
Melvin's accomplishments include but are not limited to; AF training ribbon, AF Good Conduct Medal with 1 OLC, AF longevity Service ribbon, AF Achievement medal, NCO professional military education graduation ribbon, National Defense service medal and was Employee of the year 2010 Abilene State supported Living Center.
Proceeding him in death was his mother Louise Johnson and his brother Willie Johnson.
Melvin leaves to cherish his memories his father Oysbie Johnson of Augusta Georgia his loving wife Elizabeth Strahan Johnson of Abilene Texas his daughters LaMeshia Nacole Johnson of Houston Texas, Schnestia Meyoun Johnson Wichita Falls Texas his brother David Johnson of Clarksville Tennessee his sister Paula De Vaughon Nathan Fairfax Virginia his step daughter's; Catrice Strahan of Albuquerque, New Mexico Latisha Strahan of Lancaster Texas, Kiwania Strahan of Mesquite Texas and 14 grandchildren as well as lots of Dear family and friends!
