She was born to Lazaro and Manuela Gonzalez on May 18, 1929 in Munday, Texas. Licha had 4 brothers and 1 sister. It was in Munday that she met the love of her life, Ramon Sosa. He was her first and only boyfriend, and at the age of 18, on September 22, 1947, the two young love birds eloped and started their life together. They had one son and 3 daughters and eventually moved to Abilene, Texas in 1957. In 1979 Licha lost her husband after a prolonged illness, she never remarried or even showed interest in another man. When her grandchildren would later tease her about finding a boyfriend, she always emphatically responded that there would never be a man as good as Ramon, so why bother. Licha worked for 12 years at Texas Instruments before retiring in 1992. Although her children were always a priority in her life, it was through her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren that she received, and gave, the most joy. Her title of Grandma Licha, was her crowning glory. She was the ever-devoted grandmother to them, their spouses, and even their friends. Childhood memories revolve around Grandma Licha’s house, and most importantly her kitchen table. It was here that she would always be ready to serve and feed her beloved grandchildren any time of the day. As the matriarch of a large family, she led with a quiet presence that everyone gravitated towards. In fact, at most family gatherings, you could find any number of grandchildren surrounding her vying for her attention, cuddling up with her, and taking pictures. Grandma Licha had a way of showing infinite love to everyone, to the point that each grandchild insists that they are, undoubtedly, her favorite. To which she would always respond with a mischievous smile. Most evenings she could be found sitting in her rocking chair, watching her Spanish novelas, and crocheting. Most of her great-grandchildren have a hat and blanket lovingly made by Grandma Licha. She had a wonderful sense of humor and quick wit, she would sing songs and tell jokes at family gatherings to the delight of everyone. Licha was a member of St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church since it was built and was a member of the Creative Ladies for many years. She attended Rose Park Senior Center until 2020 and made many friends and prided herself in religiously walking a mile in the gym, which she often reminded whichever grandchild was dropping her off that morning. Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting Licha will remember her with a smile upon her face and family surrounding her.
She is survived by her daughters, Manuela “Nelly” Diaz, of Austin, and Ramona Sosa of Abilene,
and Silvia Flores of Lewisville; grandsons, Santos Sosa, Jr., Sixto Sosa, Monico Diaz, Don
Flores, Angel Garcia, Sr., Ramon Diaz, and Tony Garcia; granddaughters, Donna Flores, Angie
Castaneda, Jennifer Flores, Amanda Garcia, and Marfi Nowlin; 34 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Benito Gonzalez.
Licha was preceded in death by her husband, Ramon, her son, Santos Sosa, Sr., and her
great-grandson, Stephen Ornelas, as well as her parents and 4 siblings.
