Evelyn Diane Jones, 74, of Abilene, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at a medical facility in Mansfield, TX. Funeral services will be at 11:00a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Bethel Church of God in Christ, 634 Cottonwood St., Abilene, TX. Burial will follow in the Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery, under the direction of Community Memorial Funeral Home, 1443 N. 2nd St. Abilene. Visitation will be Friday, May 16, 2014, from 6:00-8:00p.m. at the funeral home.
Evelyn was born on April 1, 1940, in Cameron, TX to Lorenzo Jones and Ethel Mae Washington. She received her GED in 1970 and moved to Abilene in 1972. She was the manager for several convenience stores for many years. Evelyn was also a direct care associate with the Abilene State Supported Living Center and was a home health care provider for many years until her illness five years ago. She was married to a farmer (J.C. Smith in 1958) and was a wonderful mother to six children. She enjoyed life, family BBQ’s and loved God, church and family. Evelyn will be dearly missed.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J.C. Smith; daughter, Sherrell C. Smith; siblings, Willie, Lorenzo, L.C. , Charles, Viola, Ida Mae Jones Banks, and Doris Jean Jones; and grandson, Quincy Smith.
She leaves to cherish her memory; her son, J.C. Smith, Jr. of Baton Rouge, LA; her daughters, Brook (James) Eckford, Sandra (Richard) Mims, Judy (Tommy) Louis, and Tamara Smith all of Abilene; her brother, David Jones; her sister, Julia Jones Stevenson Taylor; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations of food may be taken to Bethel Church of God in Christ, 634 Cottonwood.
