Coy Lee Wilson, 81 years 9 months and 22 days. Born May 3, 1940, passed from this life February 25, 2022. Coy was a loving, caring, sweet, gentle man, husband, father, papa and friend. Coy was born into a family of 4 older siblings in Spur, Texas. He grew up on a cotton farm in his early years prior to losing his mother and father at a young age. He then moved from sibling to sibling in his teens. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army in order to serve his country. He spent time in the U.S. and Germany while with the Army. After his discharge he was truly a man of many talents and trades. He has been a barber, crop duster, cotton gin employee, welder, pumper, truck driver, Sheriff’s deputy and Constable. We were constantly learning of new occupations. In 1974 Coy left the life of confirmed bachelor and married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Dockray. He credits Mary with saving his life, both physically and spiritually. In 1977 they welcomed Geta Shantel (Wilson) Mitchell into the world and in 1979 added Tina Nicole (Wilson) Dipprey to the family. The family lived in Wink until 2019 when Coy and Mary moved to Abilene. While they were only in Abilene for 3 years the bonds, friendships and relationships run deep and they felt at home.
Coy’s pride and joy was his wife and two girls until the grandkids came along. The girls then took a back seat to those grandkids. He was a loving but stern dad and expected hard work. He was strong in his convictions and knew that his girls were just on loan from God. It was his job to ensure that the girls loved the Lord and obeyed the gospel so that they could be given back to God. Coy and Mary did just as they had been commanded. They raised two faithful followers of Christ, married two faithful followers of Christ and have three of the five grandchildren who have obeyed the gospel and are living their lives for Christ. What more of a legacy can one leave behind than to know that your family is following Christ.
Coy was a character and a big presence. He could fill a room with his quiet confidence, but could bring the house down with his laugh. He loved a good joke and had a great sense of humor, but was a quiet and soft spoken as well. He was man who often had little to say until he knew you and would share a wealth of knowledge and the memories of the amazing life he lived. When he spoke we listened because it was probably going to be profound.
If you knew Coy then you knew that he never wanted to put anyone out. Even in this last month when his physical body would no longer cooperate, he would do without something rather than inconvenience someone to get what he really wanted. He was thinking of others up until the end. When he made the decision to go with comfort care he said, “I’ve had a long life. I’ve had a good life.” He was ready to go, ready to be out of pain, ready to see Mary and in his words when asked what he was most excited to see in heaven, “God!” We have no doubt he is in the presence of the Lord with those he loves and is no longer in pain.
Coy is survived by his daughter Geta Mitchell and husband Rick, grandchildren Jace and Linly; daughter Tina Dipprey and husband Jared, grandchildren Kaylee, Kara and Hudson. Coy is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Coy is preceded in death by his wife, Mary; father, Alcie Artie Alvis Wilson; mother, Lucile Pearl Wilson; two brothers, Laverne Wilson and JW Wilson; and two sisters, Vernell Leach and Winona Derrington.
Memorial Service will be held Thursday, March 3, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Remington Ridge Church of Christ, 138 Remington Rd, Abilene, Texas. Memorials can be sent to Remington Ridge Children’s Education/Playground fund.
