Alonzo "Lay" H. Bell Jr.

Alonzo “Lay” Herman Bell, Jr. “Lay”, 73, of Abilene, Texas, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2012, at a medical center in Houston, Texas. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, Abilene. Burial will follow in Texas State Veterans Cemetery at 2:00 p.m., directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at a visitation 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Alonzo “Lay” was born August 11, 1939 to Alonzo Herman Bell, Sr. and Odell Banks Bell in Dallas, Texas. He served his country in the United States Army, retiring after 22 years. Lay married Chong on March 25, 1987 in South Korea. He was also employed by the Abilene State School (now Abilene State Supported Living Center) and the Texas Department of Correctional Office for the French Robertson Unit in Abilene and Ware Unit in Colorado City. Lay enjoyed fishing, traveling, sports, and spending time with his family. Everyone knew him as a hardworking and dedicated family man.

Alonzo “Lay” was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Tina L. Bell.

Survivors include his wife, Chong Im Bell; sons, Alonzo H. Bell, II, Alonzo K. Bell, Alonzo K. Curtis, Alexander G. Bell (Verna) and Eric Bell; daughters, Olivia K. Hasting and Denise Bell Verdeja (Eric); sister, Yvonne Wiley (Leonard); and seven grandchildren.
