Matthew Arthur Kehtler, known affectionately as Matt or Matty to his loved ones, passed away on March 31, 2025, at the age of 60. Born on July 9, 1964, Matt grew into a kind, funny, and friendly man cherished by all who knew him. His final moments were spent in his home in Abbotsford, BC, where he was surrounded by the love and comfort of his family.
As an electrician, his skilled hands and dedication were a testament to over 30 years of service at Hub Fire Engines. He contributed to the construction of over 700 firetrucks, providing reliable safety to numerous fire departments. His commitment to his work was paralleled only by his passion for collectibles and cars.
Matt fully embraced the saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure." He loved scouring for hidden gems, turning discarded items into coveted treasures. Matt had a special place in his heart for old cars, always eager to impart the stories and history behind his latest find. His collection was more than a hobby; it was a narrative of his belief that everything had a story worth saving.
He is survived by his siblings Les (Julie), Jeffrey, Rosalynn (Keith), Paul (Leslie), Brad (Brenda), and Katherine. Matt took pride in being a fun-loving, redneck uncle to his nieces and nephews, Adam, Laura, Duncan, Gavin, Shane, Desmond, Holly, Rebecca, Benjamin, and Ella.
Beyond his family, Matt is also survived by his countless friends and colleagues. He thrived among them, leaving a trail of fond memories and shared experiences that will continue to ripple through the lives of those he encountered. Many regarded him as the epitome of a good friend, always ready to lend a hand, a beer, or a hearty laugh. His friends provided much solace and company, particularly throughout Matt's battle with esophageal and stomach cancer. Through this ordeal, Matt maintained his humor and grit, demonstrating an admirable strength that inspired all around him.
As we bid farewell to Matthew Arthur Kehtler, we pause to reflect on the wisdom and humour he had to offer, with a few quotes from him:
“It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt!”
“What did one saggy tit say to the other? We’d better get some support soon or people will think we’re nuts!”
Rest in peace, Matt; you will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A celebration of life will be held at 33667 Morey Ave, Abbotsford, BC on Saturday, April 26th, beginning at 2 pm. Please bring your own beverage and a chair. BBQ dinner will be served around 5 pm.
