March 12, 1925 – May 17, 2023
Our mom, Johanna passed away peacefully at Tabor Home at the age of 98 after a well lived life.
She leaves behind daughters Nancy, Millie, Lorraine (Harold), grandchildren Will, Tracy (Jillian), Jaime (Bryson), great-grandchildren Warren, Rayne, Levi, and Preston. Also sister Audrey (Harry) in Alberta, brother Bert (Nell) In Netherlands…many nieces and nephews in Canada, Holland, New Zealand and USA. She is predeceased by her husband, parents and 5 siblings.
Born in the Netherlands, Mom grew up on a farm the oldest of seven, survived the difficulties of WWII, and then married my dad in 1949. They chose to immigrate to Canada to hopefully live a better life…what an adventure!! Initially settling in Alberta, they moved to BC in 1957, having given birth to three daughters by then.
Living in Cloverdale, raising a family, working on the farm picking mushrooms, growing vegetables in her huge garden…always a busy lady, yet she always found the time and energy to sew clothes for the girls, bake our favorite recipes, and contribute to the women’s circle at our church.
In 1967, they moved to Agassiz where they bought a dairy farm and became happily immersed in yet another new community.
Seven years later it was time to retire and travel, but with that came the passing of her loving husband. What a life changer!
She kept busy, active in the community, spending time with new grandchildren, learned to play golf and eventually started travelling.
Soon she would meet her second husband, make a move to White Rock and together they travelled to many parts of the world including Europe, New Zealand, Mexico as well as numerous trips to the US.
An avid golfer, weekly card playing, and still sewing…she added painting to her list of hobbies…and in her spare time, volunteered at a local seniors centre helping to serve lunches and facilitate activities.
Her life was filled with her connection to her friends…that was always her greatest treasure. And she made friends easily, and they all loved her and spoke highly of her.
In 2016, she returned to Agassiz where she resided in Cheam Village, later moving to Tabor Home for the last 2 years of her life.
The family wish to thank the staff at Cheam Village for making her always feel at home ….and the staff at Tabor Home for the excellent care she received while residing there.
The immediate family will hold a private graveside service.
Rather than flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated in her honour.
