Frieda Martens passed away on August 4, 2017 at the age of 90 years. Frieda was born December 22, 1926 in Laird, Saskatchewan to Jacob Martens and Elizabeth Wiebe. At the age of 16 she was baptized and became a member of the Coaldale MB (Alta) Church, where she attended the Bible School for one year. From Russia, her family immigrated to Canada and homesteaded in Mullingar, Saskatchewan for nine years before moving to Gem, and then to Coaldale, Alberta. Her parents died leaving her an orphan at the age of 12 years. At the age of 14 she worked as a housemaid and nanny in Lethbridge. Then at 17 she worked for Del Monte General Store in Coaldale, where at the age of 20 she married the boss’s son Henry Martens, and they moved to BC, where together they operated Del Monte Photo Studio in Yarrow and Abbotsford. She was a member of Clearbrook MB Church, where she and her husband were ordained as Deacons in 1962. She helped in Sunday School, and was leader of the lady’s aids society. Frieda enjoyed camping with her children and grandchildren and weekend fishing trips.
She is predeceased by her sister Elizabeth and brother Jacob. She is mourned by her husband, Henry, her sons, Walter (Judy), Victor (Janice), Dan (Doris), David (Debbie) and daughter Ruth and her husband Bob Kwak, 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and her sister Margaret Willms.
