It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Andrew on February 21, 2024. Born on September 25, 1932 in Barkfield Manitoba, he lived a life of many accomplishments and he had a positive impact on the lives of all that knew him.
Andrew’s journey led him to British Columbia where he met the love of his life, Agnes Lois Krause. Andrew and Agnes were baptized together in 1952 and were united in marriage on August 21, 1954 marking the beginning of a remarkable marriage that lasted 69 years. Together they embarked on a life filled with love, commitment and shared dreams.
Andrew’s professional accomplishments are nothing short of amazing. He dedicated much of his younger life to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation leaving an indelible mark on the world of television. As the Producer of Hockey Night in Canada he brought the excitements of the game to countless homes. As well he televised the Summit Series in 1972 between Canada and the USSR, he televised the Beatles capturing the cultural heartbeat of an era and he travelled with the Irish Rovers to numerous countries producing their overseas specials. Andrew also orchestrated the Royal visits for the CBC and had the honor of meeting Queen Elizabeth on multiple occasions. In 1967 Andrew received a medal and letter from the Governor General of Canada for valuable service to the nation of Canada.
Upon retiring from CBC, Andrew’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to various ventures. From purchasing Clearbrook Sporting Goods to venturing into real estate with his sons Andy Jr. and Richard to operating a chain of 12 optical stores with the assistance of his daughter Cyndi. He demonstrates an unwavering commitment to his family’s future. Together, they built a development company developing subdivisions, commercial buildings and a hotel.
But beyond these accomplishments, his greatest achievement lay in his dedication to family. With Agnes, he raised four children-Andy Jr (Josie), Richard (Corine), Cyndi (Rick) and Debbie (Mark). His influence extends to his 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren all of whom share their faith in Jesus Christ.
In every endeavour, Andrew Martens embodied integrity, passion and a steadfast commitment to principles. His life was not just about professional success but about building a foundation of love, faith and family values that will endure for generations to come. Andrew had an unwavering faith in Christ His Saviour and is now home with Him. Andrew’s greatest achievement was doing what God asks every father/grandfather to do and that’s to be a shining example of what it means to know the Lord.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we hope to carry forward the lessons of Andrew’s life. May his legacy inspire us to dream boldly, work tirelessly and above all cherish the bonds of family and faith in Christ. Until we meet again, Andrew’s spirit will forever live on in the stories we share and the enduring impact he made in our hearts. We love you Dad/Grandpa.
