About
Every unique life deserves a unique memorial. At Bisch & Son Funeral Home in Springfield, Illinois, we create personalized funerals and cremation celebrations for loved ones from all walks of life. With a legacy of exceptional service that dates back more than a century, we are committed to providing the highest level of care possible.
One-of-a-kind funeral celebrations
We begin by listening to you. Tell us about the details that made your loved one special—a favorite scent, a cherished hobby, an unmistakable laugh—and we'll work to weave the little things into a service that reflects your loved one's life.
Perhaps it’s a lively game of bingo for your beloved bingo fan with proceeds going to charity or a hot rod procession to the cemetery for the gearhead who spent his life behind the wheel. Our attentive, experienced team is here to turn inspiration into reality.
Whether you wish to arrange a traditional funeral service or modern celebration of life, large gathering or more intimate service, we will work with you one-on-one to ensure your needs and budget are met. From floral arrangements to music selections, decor and more, we guide you through your choices with care.
Cremation in Springfield
There are many options for cremation in Springfield—and they're not all equal. We specialize in cremation services that honor loved ones in personalized ways, and families love our all-inclusive pricing. With an on-site crematory, expertise in scattering ashes and a friendly team who pays attention to every detail, we provide service that is second to none.
More and more people are choosing cremation over traditional burial, but most aren’t familiar with the many options:
- a cremation without a funeral or memorial service of any kind.
- a funeral with your loved one present, followed by cremation.
- a cremation followed by a scattering, cemetery memorialization or celebration of life—or all three.
For those who wish for something more momentous, Neptune Memorial Reef is an underwater cremation garden off the coast of Florida. A Celestis Memorial Spaceflight takes ashes into space for a little while or forever.

History
In 1896, Charles T. Bisch, a local funeral director and carpet store owner, started the Charles T. Bisch Funeral Service on 6th Street, north of Washington Street, in Springfield, Illinois. As the business grew, he established a funeral home in the Lincoln Home area at 8th and Capital streets, where he worked with his son H.P. In 1950, Charles, H.P. and H.P.’s son Phil Bisch III opened Bisch Funeral Home at 505 E. Allen St. It was Springfield's first business dedicated entirely to funerals.
The funeral home has two large chapels, arching doorways and some eclectic furnishings purchased by Charles T. Bisch during the Chicago World’s Fair in the early 1900s.
Growth and expansion
In 1982, a crematory was built on the property. It was among the first in Springfield, providing seamless care to families requesting cremation.
In 1995, a second Bisch funeral home opened on Springfield’s growing west side. This location offers single-level access, a formal chapel and a large great room that can be divided into smaller spaces. The funeral home has custom woodwork throughout.
Moving into the future
In 1997, Phil’s sons Derek and Phillip Bisch IV, representing the fifth generation of the Bisch family, joined their businesses with the Dignity Memorial family of funeral and cemetery providers. With the unmatched benefits of the network, our commitment to service excellence continues to this day.
