About
Moss Service Funeral Home in Cullman, Alabama, has been providing funeral and cremation services for more than a century. Located between Birmingham and Decatur, our funeral home has served Cullman and the surrounding areas with compassion and professionalism since 1882. Here, we are a family—and we treat you as one of ours.
A beautiful, full-service funeral home
Moss Service Funeral Home has been caring for families for a very long time. As preferences and traditions have evolved, so have we. The 2nd Avenue funeral home is a beautifully updated space in which to plan and host a memorial. Our two large visitation parlors each have a private lobby and plenty of comfortable seating for friends and family.
Our chapel holds more than 250 people and includes a private family area should you wish to use it. The high-quality sound system works in conjunction with both our electronic keyboard and classical piano, and we have a musician available to you. Our caring team includes two ordained ministers, or we can reach out to a local minister of your choice.
Special touches are our specialty. Many of the families we serve appreciate the opportunity to choose memory portraits, memory movies, cremation jewelry and more. It’s the rare family who doesn’t ask us for a personalized register book made with family photos.
Personalized funerals and memorials
We believe every person’s life is unique—and deserves to be celebrated in a unique and memorable way. Our team is skilled at creating one-of-a-kind tributes that honor and showcase a loved one’s passions, individuality and personality. Our visitation parlors are easily transformed into reception room for a catered event, and our expansive green lawn is perfect for a tented celebration of life. We are always happy to arrange decor, food and drinks, and more. In fact, we have an exclusive contract with the best caterer in town.
With an attentive team who is dedicated to going the extra mile for every family, there is almost no limit to what we can plan for you or your loved one. Did he make the best barbecue in town? Imagine a picnic with a bluegrass band and a lunch of pulled pork sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, and cornbread. Did she have a green thumb? We can decorate our chapel with her favorite plants and give family and friends personalized seeds packets to plant at home. We’ve turned the funeral home into a mecca for Alabama and Auburn fans, and we’ve rolled motorcycles and more right into our chapel. If you can imagine it, we’ll try to do it.
Of course, if you prefer a traditional funeral, we are experts in that, too.
Cremation services
Not everyone knows that there are many cremation options. If you are interested in cremation, the funeral home team can explain the process and the different memorial and burial choices. From a direct cremation without a service or a witness to a full funeral service before or after the cremation and more, we help you understand this increasingly common decision.
Pre-plan with us
The Moss Service Funeral Home team includes three licensed insurance agents who can help your family pre-plan a funeral or cremation. When you take charge of your own final arrangements, you remove the guesswork for family members. You decide whether you want a casket burial or cremation, a traditional funeral or a modern celebration of life. You can plan your own music, choose a theme, pick a memorial location, and even decide on cemetery property.
Pre-planning also allows you to face difficult decisions when you are calm and focused, keeping your loved ones from becoming burdened with hard choices under emotional circumstances. Pre-arrangements also allow you to lock in current pricing, protecting you and your loved ones against future rising costs.
Community involvement
As longstanding members of the Cullman community, we feel passionately about supporting our friends and neighbors. We have built strong relationships with local law enforcement. We’re an annual sponsor of the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office Rodeo and have sponsored events through the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club and Lions Club. Sports teams countywide also have our support, and we often participate in events with churches and senior groups. Our manager is a certified presenter for Hospice Foundation of America, which provides continuing education credit for medical professionals. We also often participate in events with area churches, such as Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, and senior groups, such as Cullman County Commission on Aging.

History
Moss Service Funeral Home was founded in 1882 by Christopher Schueing, who was Cullman’s first embalmer. He was succeeded in the business by his son, Chris Schueing, and his son, Harry Schueing. At the time, the business was called C.C. Schueing and Son Funeral Home.
J. Grady Moss moved to Cullman from Tuscumbia in 1933 and worked at the funeral home until Harry retired and Grady bought the funeral home. He operated the business as Moss-Schueing Funeral Home until 1938, when he changed the name to Moss Service Funeral home.
Grady often said, “I not only think, but know, that the people of Cullman and Cullman County and the surrounding counties are wonderful people, and they deserve the very best in funeral home facilities for caring for their departed loved ones. It is my desire and intention, Lord being willing, to give these fine people just that.”
That desire and intention still stands. The entire team at Moss Service—many of whom have served families here for decades—embodies those high standards of service and care for the community to this day.
