Ronald L. Cundiff, 83, of Cape Charles, VA, departed peacefully on April 30, 2024, in the care of his loving family. Husband to the love of his life, Judith M Cundiff, they were married for 57 happy and adventurous years.
Son of the late Kyle E. Cundiff (Terre Haute, Ind.) and Margaret N. Barnes (Evansville, Ind), Ron was born in Dallas, PA., on July 8, 1940. The youngest of eight children, he was lovingly doted on by his four sisters.
Ron proudly served in the US Navy as an airman onboard the USS Independence aircraft carrier. Throughout the years, he shared many fond memories of his travels around the world. Upon completion of serving his country, Ron lived with several of his older siblings while working in PA and NJ. During this time, he made a lasting impression on his nieces and nephews as the “cool” uncle.
However, his world changed when he met Judy at a mutual friend’s wedding. Married in 1966, they happily raised their three children in Edison, NJ.
Ron worked for Proctor and Gamble in Staten Island, NY then Avenel, NJ, for over 30 years, retiring at age 55, coincidentally on the same day his first grandchild was born.
Always an avid hunter and fisherman, Ron truly loved the cabin he built and shared with his lifelong friends in New Albany, PA. The many memories created with friends and family at “the cabin” brought him much needed solace during his final days.
Ron’s adventures took his family to Cheriton, VA where annual camping trips at Cherrystone Campground will forever be a core memory that will carry on for generations to come.
Ron and his wife Judy never met a stranger they didn’t like and opened their homes to everyone.
From Edison, NJ where Ron raised his family, to Cape Charles, VA steaming up only the freshest Blue Claw crabs and clams for all to enjoy and finally to Okeechobee, FL where he spent his retirement years fishing and enjoying close friends. Ron was always the center and heart of any neighborhood community where he happened to be.
Ron will be remembered for his strong commitment to family, powerful voice and presence, joy of singing, passion for gardening and love for preparing wonderful meals for family and friends.
He is survived by his children, Ronald J. of Whiting, NJ, Lisa M. Schade and her husband, Andrew, of Woodstock, GA, Kenneth C. and his wife Tracey of Columbus, NJ as well as nephew, Ronald Pflueger, whom he cherished like a son. Ron known as “Pop Pop” is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Kyle Schade, New York, NY, Dalton and Rebecca Cundiff, Columbus, NJ, Hunter Cundiff, Hershey, PA, Travis Cundiff, Whiting, NJ, Julia Schade, Woodstock, GA and Noah Cundiff, Whiting, NJ.
He is also survived by his sister, Joan Carney and her husband, Russell, of Tunkhannock, PA as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Ron was preceded in death by his beloved siblings, Beverly Anderson, Thelma Stolarick, Marion Salerno, Edward, George and Kyle Cundiff.
Ron’s family wish to express their gratitude to all that have reached out to them during this difficult time.
