Carol was born and raised in New Britain, Connecticut with her twin sister, Lenore Albright, and brothers, Charles and Russell Hjerpe. She attended the University of Pennsylvania, earning a degree in Dental Hygiene and continued her education at Columbia University, with a B.S in Public Health. While attending Columbia, she met John, her future husband, a fellow student who waited tables in her dining hall.
Married in 1963, Carol and John moved to the Washington, D.C area where Carol worked as a dental hygienist while John attended Georgetown University Law School. Later, to complement her love for travel and adventure, Carol worked as a travel agent so that she and her family could travel around the world.
Carol and her family loved the beach, spending summers on 86th and 142nd Streets in Ocean City, MD. She enjoyed eating lobster, crabcakes, corn on the cob and her favorite sweets, M&M’s and ice cream. She adored her grandchildren and always handed them a $20 bill with each visit. Anyone who knew Carol was aware of her passion for celebrating Christmas and her elaborate villages and other holiday décor in practically every corner of the house.
Carol is survived by her husband, John, their two children, Kevin Cleland Joyce (wife Elisa) and Holly Joyce Hoey (husband John), and grandchildren Britnie, Zach, Bethany, Liam, Ella and Caroline.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to friends, family and the staff at The Summit at Winter Garden senior living center and the many caregivers who loved and cared for her during her final days.
