He graduated from National Taiwan Normal University in 1970 and came to the United States in 1973 to study at the University of Virginia. After earning his PhD in Physics in 1977, he worked as an electrical engineer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and was a research member at the University of Virginia. In 1979, he and his family moved to New Jersey when he joined Bell Laboratories. Li-Kong’s career continued at IBM Watson Research Center as Senior Staff Engineer in Semiconductor Technology. After he retired from IBM, he was a Professor in the Department of Microelectronics at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. He was a pioneer in the research and development of semiconductor and CMOS microprocessor technologies. He published over 100 research findings at major peer reviewed journals and had about 100 U.S. patents.
Li-Kong was an avid reader and life-long learner, enjoying history, astronomy, nature, music and travel. He was a devoted husband and father, encouraging and supporting his wife and daughters in their careers. His wisdom and creativity will be missed by all who knew him.
Li-Kong is survived by his wife of 50 years, Wen-Jen Regina; his two daughters, Melinda and Amanda; and his siblings, Solomon, Robert and Wendy, and their spouses and children.
