Josephine Kasper, a long time resident of Nanuet, New York, passed away on May 4, 2024. Josephine Joyce (Vespucci) Kasper was born on August 23, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York. Josephine, one of two children born to Philip Vespucci and Rose (Mirabile) Vespucci, grew up on Pacific A Street in Brooklyn, NY. Later, Josephine and her family moved to Featherbed Lane in Bronx, NY.
Josephine attended and graduated early from Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn. Following high school, she attended Brooklyn College. Her love for Spanish language and culture led to her desire to continue her studies at the University of Mexico.
Upon her graduation from Brooklyn College and University of Mexico, Josephine became an elementary school teacher in Bronx, NY.
Josephine married her devoted husband Gerald Kasper (deceased) in 1964. They resided in Manhattan, and moved to Queens, NY. They decided to move to Rockland County, NY in 1976 with their daughter, Sophia. After taking time to stay at home with their young daughter, Josephine decided to go back to pursue her Master’s Degree in Education at Iona College in New Rochelle.
Once she received her Master’s degree, Josephine became a secondary school teacher in the Clarkstown Central School District, teaching both Spanish and Italian languages at the middle and high school levels.
After retiring from her teaching career, Josephine became the children’s department manager at Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Nanuet. At Barnes and Noble, she facilitated story hours for children and continued her love of learning and working with people.
Josephine had many varied interests and hobbies including reading, writing, knitting and crocheting, cooking, travel, and most importantly, spending time with her family.
Josephine is survived by her daughter Sophia (Kasper) Poggi, son-in-law, Christopher, grandsons Michael and William, brother John Vespucci of Suffern, NY, and extended family and friends.
A viewing will be held at Becker Funeral Home in Westwood, NJ on May 14th from 9:00-10:30 am. Following the viewing, Josephine will be laid to rest with her late husband, Gerald, at Calverton National Cemetery in Wading River, NY at 1:00pm where a service will be performed. In lieu of flowers, her family requests contributions made in Josephine’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
