It is with a heavy heart that we announce Douglas Gordon Ferris passed away on April 29/2024 at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, B.C.
The family would like to say Thank You to Dr.’s Bauman, Poonja and Stevens for their excellent care. Your empathy and compassion did not go unnoticed. A special thanks to the doctors, nurses, respiratory techs and all the staff of 8 North and B.C. Cancer Clinic Victoria. You have our endless gratitude.
Predeceased by parents Elwin Ferris, Adeen Ferris, William Luch (stepfather) and sister Dianne Campbell.
Survived by his loving wife Kathy, sister and brothers-in-law, Julie (Bengt), Pat Campbell, brother Ron, sons and daughters-in-law Sean (Arlene), Kel (Mary), grandchildren Lauren, Cael, Zachary and Jace, nephews and spouses, Paul (Derek), David (Ann), Tyler (Anna) and Taryn as well as a huge extended family and many close friends.
Doug was born in St. Catharines, Ontario but eventually found his way to the west coast where he made a beautiful life with his soulmate Kathy in Victoria. Doug’s generous nature and abundant compassion eventually lead him to a career in health care where he found his calling caring for elderly patients at James Bay Lodge. Before caring for them professionally, Doug was always drawn to the elderly, even including an older gentleman on his first date with Kathy because he knew this man loved the music they were about to enjoy. You could often find him playing the lottery at his local corner store or enjoying a Late Night Swim/Sauna at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre. He was a great neighbour and a well known member of his community. Doug would often go out of his way to help someone out, or give his own belongings away to make someone’s life a little easier that day. He never gave it a second thought to help someone in need.
As much as he loved his fellow humans, Doug’s love for his family was gigantic, unconditional and always easily given. He loved to laugh but loved making others laugh even more, with an arsenal of ‘grandpa’s silly songs’ for the grandkids, or ‘Doug jokes’ to the nephews, always lined up and ready to go. They were goofy, corny and good spirited just like he was and they will forever be a part of his legacy.
To the husband, you will always be her ‘bug on the ceiling guy’! ‘You may have been one person to the world but you were the world to one person’. You are her sunshine, forever and more.
To the brother, you were a constant ally who always had your sister’s backs, but also a best friend who would follow them to the end of the earth…… like the Yukon or Sweden. A loyal big brother from the beginning.
To the father, you were kind and giving. You showed love eagerly with an open heart and an open door. Always proud and willing to share about his sons, families, and their accomplishments.
To the uncle, you were often a father figure who always loved and supported his nephews and nieces while making them laugh and groan at the ‘uncle Doug jokes’.
Thank you for all the laughs and the immeasurable love!
We’ll see you again.
A donation in Doug’s memory may be made to the B.C. Lung Foundation.
