The youngest of five children, Yum Kin was born November 8, 1935 in Shiqi, Zhongshan, China. After receiving her BSc at Hong Kong University, she made the long journey to Canada by boat in 1958 and consequently studied at Ottawa University, earning a masters’ degree in biochemistry, and marrying David, the love of her life in 1969. Soon after their daughter Kim was born, Yum Kin and David settled in Vancouver, where they enjoyed life together for over 50 years, contributing in many ways to their respective churches St. John the Apostle and Knox United, and forming lifelong friendships, most notably those in the “Pre-Opera” group.
A devoted wife, mother, popo, sister and friend, Yum Kin was a woman of varied talents—a classically trained singer, watercolour painter, flower arranger in the Ikebana style, legendary cook and astute financial planner. Her inner strength and resilience were on full display in the last 18 months as she lived courageously with terminal cancer and a broken heart at the unexpected passing of her husband nine months ago.
Yum Kin was much loved and will be sadly missed by many, including surviving siblings Yum Hin (Hong), Yum Kuen (Maria), and Shirley (Alan); daughter Kim (Matt); and beloved grandchildren Abby, Josie and Sam.
All are warmly invited to attend Yum Kin’s Celebration of Life to be held at Knox United Church https://maps.app.goo.gl/MjVBazz9MSH2HD8B8 on Saturday June 1 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the BC Cancer Agency BC Cancer
