Obituary of Guy Grayson Summers III

IN THE CARE OF

Demaine Funeral Home

Guy Grayson Summers III went to be with the Lord on May 3, 2024, in Pueblo West, Colorado (formerly of Midlothian, Virginia) at the age of 61. Guy is survived by his wife of nearly 34 years, Teri S. Summers of Pueblo West, Colorado (formerly of Midlothian, Virginia); his son, Brandon Newcomb of Chesterfield, Virginia; his daughter, Kaitlyn Summers (Graham Gwaltney III) of Chester, Virginia; his mother, Clara Jean Summers of Springfield, Virginia; his sister, Suzanne Ward of Sewickley, Pennsylvania; his grandchildren, Ryder and Abigail Newcomb; his nine nieces and nephews, many cousins and great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Guy Grayson Summers Jr., his beloved granddaughter, Haylee Elise Newcomb and nephew, Joshua Anthony Clifton. Guy was born on February 13, 1963, in Arlington, Virginia. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School where he played varsity football. He graduated from James Madison University in 1985 with a degree in Music Education and was a proud member of the James Madison Marching Royal Dukes. He later received his Master of Arts from Western Kentucky University in 1990. Guy began his music education career in Fluvanna, where he met the love of his life, Teri. After their marriage in 1990, they moved to Midlothian, Virginia, where they began raising their family. Guy was also the Marching Band Director at Monacan High School. In his youth, Guy enjoyed fishing, camping, organized sports and traveling with his family across country. Guy shared his father’s love for collecting Lionel trains and restoring antique cars. His passion for music and education continued to grow over the years and he shared that joy with those he loved and the students he taught. Guy and Teri moved west in August 2021 to Colorado where he taught music at the elementary and middle school levels, sharing his passion of the beauty and power of music with his students. When he wasn’t teaching during this time, he enjoyed exploring the beauty of the landscapes of Colorado with his wife, adapting to the western culture (hence the cowboy hat) and catching the sunrises. He was a dedicated member of St. John’s United Methodist Church where he shared his faith, love of music, family and community. Guy valued his faith, his time with family, classical instrumental pieces and embracing the beauty of each day as a gift from God. He especially loved the moments that he spent with his grandchildren, Ryder and Abigail, where they knew him as “Poppy.” Guy was a loving husband, father, “Poppy”, son, brother, uncle and friend who will be dearly missed. He will be remembered near and far for the many lives he touched, his big smile, hugs, and never met a stranger attitude. Friends welcome for viewing on Wednesday, May 15 from 1-2 pm at St. John UMC, 5312 Backlick Road, Springfield, followed immediately by a service at 2 pm and a reception at 3 pm. Interment at Dale Memorial Park, Chesterfield, VA, on Monday, May 20 at 12 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, the National Education of Association Foundation, or the Joni Fair Hospice House (Sangre de Cristo Community Care) in Pueblo, Colorado.
