She was born on June 19, 1932, in Thorp, WI, the daughter of Peter and Estelle (Mamajek) Zukowski. Gerrie married Herbert Elzinga on May 25, 1957 at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in her hometown of Thorp, WI. Herb preceded her in death on March 25, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Robert, Leonard, and Donald Zukowski.
Gerrie is survived by her only son, Jim (Sherrie) Elzinga of Springfield; she was a special mother-in-law to Lori (Mike) Foster and she was a loving “Grandma G” to Laura and Adam Pressley. She was adored by her 20 nieces and nephews and a favorite cousin to many.
Gerrie worked as a legislative aide to Senator William Mahar, and also worked in the medical field as a secretary. She was a 60 year member of Our Lady of the Ridge Catholic Church and recent member of Christ the King Catholic Church, the Ladies Auxilary American Legion, a den mother for Cub Scout’s; and a member of the PTA, Newcomers Club of Orland Park, Telephone Pioneers, and Worth Township Republicans. Gerrie loved to play bridge and golf, baking, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her family.
Visitation and Funeral Mass: Family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at Christ the King Church, 1930 Barberry Dr., Springfield. Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Wayne Stock officiating.
A Graveside Ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2024, at Chapel Hill Gardens South Cemetery, 11333 S. Central Ave., Oak Lawn, IL.
