Theresa (Mulhern) Sugrue, of Olney, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the age of 84. Theresa was born on July 11, 1939, in New York to Thomas and Johanna Mulhern. She graduated from St. Helena’s High School in 1957. She married John Sugrue in 1963 and they moved to Holland where John worked for the Dutch Navy. They returned to America in 1966 to start a family. Theresa was a stay-at-home mother for many years but after her youngest child started first grade, she went back to school at Montgomery College to become a Medical Lab Technician. While in school she worked part time for Montgomery Childcare Association at Greenwood Elementary School. After graduating from Montgomery College in 1984 she started working at Dr. Thomas Dooley’s Office in Olney where she continued to work until she retired.
Theresa was a long-time resident of Olney, Maryland along with her late husband John Sugrue. Her and John both loved their house in Olney Mill and spent many hours enjoying their view of the Olney Mill Park from their kitchen and dining room. She is survived by her three children Noreen, Dennis (Kristin), and Jacqueline (Mark) and her five grandchildren Ryan, Devin, Madeline Beck, and Riley and Brendan Smith as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her five older sisters Kathleen Wappler, Anna Budney, Peggy Ferrante, Mary Buchanan and Shelia Mulhern and her younger brother Thomas Mulhern. Theresa enjoyed spending time with her family, celebrating her grandchildren and hosting holiday celebrations. She was a committed friend and enjoyed meeting with her coffee club as well as spending time with her neighborhood friends. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home (11800 New Hampshire Ave, Silver Spring, MD) on May 16, 2024 between 5:00 – 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on May 17th at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Olney, MD. Visitation will be from 10:30 am – 11:00 am with Mass at 11:00 am. An informal luncheon will be held afterwards for those who wish to celebrate and remember her life.
