Born on May 23, 1938, in Newberry, Michigan, to Donald L. Bugg and Verna M.(Little) Bugg, he embarked on a remarkable journey of service and compassion throughout his life.
Donald's commitment to serving his country began when he joined the United States Army in 1957, a decision that would shape his path for over three decades. Rising through the ranks, he exemplified courage and leadership, earning the rank of Colonel and serving as a paratrooper and troop commander in Co F. 425th Rangers, 1st Btn, 125th Infantry, and culminating his 30 year career as Director of Intelligence STARQ Headquarters, Lansing MI.
In 1959, Donald met the love of his life Janet Gilmore, through a pen pal correspondence while stationed in the military in Ft. Huachuca, AZ. Their initial connection blossomed into a deep and enduring love, culminating in a memorable first meeting at the Michigan Central Train Station in Detroit. They married on September 16, 1961, marking the beginning of a lifelong companionship filled with love and devotion.
Beyond his distinguished military career, Donald found fulfillment in various roles, including Sales Manager for AT&T for 30 years, and the IT Director for Blue Cross Blue Shield for the final 10 years of his working career. Donald enjoyed woodworking and fly-fishing. Not only did he teach his grandkids to fly-fish, he crafted the his own bamboo fly rods. He crafted beautiful toys and furniture with precision and care.
A pillar of his community, Donald served as president of his Condo Association, and was actively involved in Community Bible Study. He was an Elder at Faith Church. His compassionate spirit extended beyond borders as he participated in mission trips to provide aid and support to those in need, including trips to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and Honduras to ensure access to safe water.
Donald's legacy is one of kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to others. He touched the lives of many with his gentle demeanor and willingness to lend a helping hand whenever needed.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet; his daughters Elizabeth Becker and Julie Semones; his grandchildren Justin (Jaime) Fallon, Kryssy (Justin) Becker-Krenitsky, Kiera (Zade) Becker-Kaakarni, and Elena (Anthony) Hoder; his siblings, Richard Bugg and Patricia Daniel, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Rich and Kathi Allen. Donald is preceded in death by his parents, great-grandson baby Robert Fallon, his son-in-law Pete Becker, his brother Vercil Bugg and his brother-in-law, TJ Daniel.
A visitation for Donald will be held Monday, May 6, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Pixley Funeral Home, 322 W. University Dr., Rochester, Michigan 48307. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at Faith Church, 160 W. Hamlin Rd, Rochester Hills, MI 48307 with visitation at 10 am, service at 11 am, followed by Military Honors, then light refreshments.
