Joseph Hugh Call, Jr. journeyed to his heavenly home on April 30th, 2024, in Raleigh, North Carolina. He courageously fought a seven-year battle with cancer and defied all odds by the grace of God. Joe spent his final moments at home surrounded by his loving family, who find comfort in knowing that he is now living in the house of the Lord, free from illness and patiently awaiting their reunion.
Joe was a fiercely devoted husband, loving father, caring son, and loyal brother. He is best described by all who knew him as a uniquely kind, humble, and honest spirit.
Joe was born in Richmond, Virginia and moved to Raleigh at age five, where he lived the rest of his life. Joe cherished his childhood years in Raleigh’s Spring Valley neighborhood, where he attended Aldert Root Elementary, Daniels Middle School, and Sanderson High School (class of 1977). Unbeknownst to Joe, the love of his life, Judi Troxler, was in his graduating class at Sanderson. Joe and Judi met for the first time seven years after graduation on a fateful night in November 1984.
Joe then attended Montreat-Anderson College, followed by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a degree in History (class of 1981). Upon graduation, Joe went to work with his father in the apartment business where he made a lasting impact on his employees and residents as a true servant leader. In May 1986, Joe married Judi and they later had three children: Josh, Madison, and Anna Grace. Joe adored his wife and children. Joe loved spending time at Lake Gaston, as boat captain for his family and the best hamburger chef on the lake. He also loved family vacations, watching football, and cars, but more than anything – the Lord and his family. He devoted his life to serving both.
Joe is survived by his wife of 38 years, Judi Troxler Call; his children, Joseph Hugh "Josh" Call, III (Kate Call), Madison Call Janeczko (Joe Janeczko), and Anna Grace Call; his sister, Catherine Call Boykin (Duke Boykin); his mother, Sara Lecky Call; and many other dearly beloved family members.
He is joining his late father, Joseph Hugh Call, Sr., in Heaven, which is a comfort to us all.
The visitation will be held on Monday, May 6th at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary’s St., Raleigh, from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Tuesday, May 7th at 11:00 am in the main worship center at Providence Church, 6339 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh.
Joe’s family has asked for donations to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America (https://lcfamerica.org/donate/) in lieu of flowers.
The Call family extends their gratitude to their family and friends, Joe’s physicians, and Transitions LifeCare for their prayers and support throughout this difficult time. Psalm 91. Isaiah 40:31
