November 27th 1942 - April 27th 2024
Fred Bauer Jr. (Freddie), was a man who loved his family and friends dearly, died peacefully at his home on April 27, 2024 with his wife Sandi by his side. He was born in Portland, OR on November 27th 1942, to his parents Fred Bauer Sr. and Mary Bojinovich Bauer. The Bauer family were lifelong residents of the Portland community residing early in North Portland where he grew up and Fred found the love of his life Sandi and they were married for 58 years. He attended Roosevelt High where he played football and baseball. His higher education took him to The University of Oregon and Portland State. He played football and baseball at U of O, supplanting his lifelong dedication as an Oregon Duck fan.
After school, he moved back to Portland to work in the family car business with his father and brother Tom Bauer at Fred Bauer Chevrolet, where he became famous for his television commercials as “The Saint of St Johns”. After selling the dealership in 1987 he took ownership of DALCO Leasing and continued in the automobile industry for another 20 years. In 1996 he and his longtime friend Tim O’Callahan embarked on a real estate development and co-owned a building in Tanasborne.
Fred was active in the community serving as Tournament Chair for the Tournament Golf Foundation Inc. (TGFI) producing the LPGA events in Portland. He also served on the Waverly Children’s Home and later Trillium family Services, Portland Rotary Club, and the Oregon Automobile Dealers Association.
In retirement, Fred and Sandi were members of Rancho LaQuinta CC in LaQuinta, CA. They were also founding members of Pumpkin Ridge GC in 1992. Columbia Edgewater CC and Rock Creek CC where they played their golf earlier in life.
Fred and Sandi were longtime members of the Multnomah Athletic Club and Sunset Athletic club where they played tennis and racquetball.
One of Fred’s lifelong passions was automobile racing and he was involved in the Sports Car Club of America where he raced Corvettes in the early 60’s. His car of choice was the 1961 Corvette.
Fred’s priority was always family and friends. He coached his daughters in basketball and soccer and continued to follow high school and college sports his entire life. He loved to help anyone in need and was always known to be compassionate and understanding regardless of the situation. His love of animals and hummingbirds made him a truly a wonderful man. Fred also loved playing cards with his friends at their homes in LaQuinta, Gearhart and Black Butte Ranch.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Sr and Mary; and his brother Jimmy. He is survived by his wife Sandi; his children Melissa Larson (Eric) and Becky Bauer (Dave Griffith, dec.); his grandson Garrett Larson and his brother Tom Bauer.
