David Karl Jones, our beloved brother and uncle, passed away April 30, 2024, from cancer in Pflugerville, Texas, surrounded by his family. David was born May 14, 1951, at Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, to the late Robert S. Jones and Dorothy L. Jones. David was raised in Corpus Christi and spent his early years on the west side (Saxet Heights) attending Oak Park Elementary and Driscoll Junior High. David and his brother played a lot of Little League baseball during this time.
After his family moved to the southside of town, David spent a lot of time at the beach, surfing with friends, riding motorcycles, and playing electric guitar. He graduated from Richard King High School in 1969. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin, he went on a solo backpacking trip to Europe. Upon returning, he acquired a masters degree in clinical counseling from what is now Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi. David then began was what was to be a 30-year-plus career as a director of Family Service Centers in Guantánamo, Pensacola, Kingsville, Beeville, and Ingleside. He then moved back to Corpus Christi when his parents were getting older, assuming the director’s position at the Corpus Christi Naval Base until his retirement.
After he retired David lived his life as he wished. He had many hobbies and was an avid traveler. He enjoyed racing cars on various tracks across the country, attending auto shows and auctions with his brother Bobby and nephew Zach, and riding his motorcycle around Corpus and the Texas hill country. David enjoyed visiting his sister, Karen, and her family in the Piney Woods of Northeast Texas as well as his brother’s family in the Austin area. Although he had a variety of interests, David was foremost a judicious collector of World War II memorabilia, honoring his father, who survived 50 missions as an Air Force B-24 bomber pilot.
David enjoyed spending time with family and friends and never missed an opportunity to send thoughtful gifts and celebrate every special occasion. He was fiercely independent, private, proud, and brave. We will all miss David’s great hugs, wicked sense of humor, teasing, his soft spot for animals, as well as that twinkling in his eye and mischievous grin.
He will be deeply missed but forever in our hearts. He is now in the loving arms of God as this is a temporary goodbye.
David is survived by his brother Bobby Jones (Darla) and his sister Karen Jones Barnes (Bill), nieces Corrie, Hayley, Zoe and nephews Shane and Zach.
The family would like to thank the employees at Magnolia Hospice, Pflugerville, Texas for their compassion. Private family services will be held at Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers we ask that you contribute in memory of David to any animal Humane Society, group, or charity.
