On the Feast of the Archangels, September 29, 2024, Carol Lynn Roseberry, age 76, was added to the Heavenly Host. Surrounded at her death in Columbus, Ohio, were her colleague, Sandy Mathias, colleague and friend, Chad Baker, friend and former student, Don Erwin, and her sister and brother-in-law, Marilynn Roseberry Ward and Elliott Ward.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Linda Roseberry, and her nieces Laurel and Heather Roseberry.
Much beloved by family, colleagues, students, and friends, Professor Lynn Roseberry held both a Bachelor and Master of Music from Northwestern University and completed all coursework for a Doctor of Music from Indiana University in Vocal Performance with cognates in Musicology and Choral Conducting. During her teaching career she served on the voice faculties of Luther College, Otterbein College; where she was Director of Choral and Vocal Activities; Indiana University and Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI), Indiana University, The Ohio State University and Capital University Conservatory of Music where she also served as Assistant Dean of the School of Communication and the Conservatory of Music, and Dean of the Conservatory.
In addition to singing with the Columbus Symphony Opera and Dorian Opera Companies, she sang with the Choral Institute of the Aspen Music Festival under the direction of Sergiu Commisiona, Murray Sidlin, Joel Revson, John Nelson, Margaet Hawkins, Fiora Contino and William Hall. While performing in Chicago, she sang several seasons with the Chicago Symphony chorus under the direction of Sir Georg Solti, Margaret Hillis, Daniel Barenboim, Carlo Maria Giulini, Claudio Abbado, and James Levine. She can also be heard on serval Grammy Award winning recordings made during her association with this organization.
A very active oratorio singer, she has been a featured soloist in numerous works, including the Verdi Requiem, Britten’s War Requiem, Mozart’s Grand Mass in C minor, The Poulenc Gloria, and The Saint Matthew Passion of JS Bach. In addition, her operatic credits include such roles as Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus, Nedda in Pagliacci, and Poverika in the American Premier of Tsar Sultan, Rimsky-Korsakov.
She has also played the role of Maria Callas in Terrance McNally’s Master Class. Many of her former students have gone on to teaching and performing careers of their own including on and off Broadway, Regional Opera Companies, and such professional Choral Ensembles as Chanticleer.
She would have us all “Be of Good Cheer.” If so inclined, memorials are encouraged at Sandy Mathias’ Facebook page, and donations in her name may be made to our brothers and sisters now suffering from Hurricane Helene at Samaritan’s Purse; our Wounded Warriors at Tunnels to Towers; our trees and flowers at Dawes Arboretum; or the Lynn Roseberry named Chair fund at Capital University.
A memorial Service in her honor will be held at Gloria Dei at Capital University, October 26, 2024, at 2 p.m.
