Madeline Marie Backes (nee Houseman), a beloved step-mother, grandmother, sister, and wife, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2024, at the age of 77 in Tampa, FL. Madeline was born on September 10, 1946, in Detroit, MI to Richard James and Lois Mardell Houseman
Madeline was a devoted wife to her husband, Melvyn Backes - a native of New Orleans, whom she met while living in Cape Canaveral, FL (during the Saturn Apollo Moon Program). After Florida, their careers took them to Alamogordo, NM; Seattle, WA; Huntsville, AL; and Tampa.
Madeline dedicated her career to the aerospace industry, serving as an executive secretary to several Boeing Company Vice Presidents. After graduating from City University in Bellevue, WA with a BS degree in Business Administration, she became a Finance Manager for Boeing, on the Space Station program. Her sharp mind and dedication to her work earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues.
Outside of her professional responsibilities, Madeline loved spending time in the kitchen cooking that ‘special’ meal, especially New Orleans based Cajun recipes. As a new transplant to Tampa, Madeline became involved with Tampa Newcomers, Tampa Palms Women’s Club, and was an accomplished bridge player. Madeline also enjoyed the comfort and companionship of her feline friends – Alphie, Sassy, Bailey, and O.C.
Madeline's passing leaves a void in the lives of all who knew her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will continue to inspire and uplift those she leaves behind. Though she may no longer walk among us, Madeline's spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
A celebration of Madeline's life will be held at Lake Lawn Funeral Home in New Orleans, LA, on May 4, 2024 at 12:00pm. May she rest in peace, knowing she made a profound impact on the lives of those around her. In lieu of flowers, as Madeline was a breast cancer survivor, please make donations to the Moffitt Cancer Center (www.moffitt.org/give).
