It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather William, just 3 months shy of his 100th birthday.
Bill was born in the small village of Tiny Saskatchewan. He left the family farm at the age of 17 to join the army. He fought in World War II and was wounded at Ortona Italy. Bill shared many stories of his overseas adventures with his children and grandchildren.
After returning home Bill met his future wife Lena in 1946. They married one year later and had two sons Jerry and Leonard. Bill worked as a bus driver for the City of Winnipeg for 38 years until his retirement in 1988.
Bill and Lena built a beautiful life together. They spent many happy hours with Lena’s large family of brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. Both were hard workers who volunteered many hours at their church, Holy Eucharist Parish. Bill and Lena both loved spending time, laughing and working with their fellow parishioners, many of whom became life-long friends.
Bill was heartbroken when Lena passed in 2015. He moved to Concordia Village where he lived until his passing. Bill read the newspaper every day, and worked on the crossword puzzle. He loved watching wrestling and sports on television.
Gido looked forward to visits from the “Regina” Puras and loved seeing his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Brunch at Smitty’s and dinner at Montana’s were two of his favourites. Many a Sunday morning was spent in Smitty’s with family and friends, usually arranged by Bill’s niece Valerie. She also made sure Uncle Bill was supplied with perogies when she visited.
Bill was proud of his sons Jerry (Susan) and Leonard (Sandi) and his grandchildren Paul (Miranda), Christine (Brian), Landon, and Amanda (Lucas). He was delighted to become a great grandfather to Hayli, Presley, Kainan, Jake and Lyla.
Bill lived an eventful and happy life. He looked forward to re-joining the love of his life, Lena. We are sure they are both looking down on the lives they impacted so immensely with love and joy.
We will miss you Gido. You will never be forgotten.
