Billy Glen Painter (“Bill”), 85, was called upon to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 2, 2024. He was born on January 22, 1939, in Roane County, West Virginia to the late Effa Edith Hunt Painter and Herbert Franklin Painter. He grew up on his beloved Ambler Ridge. He was double promoted twice while in school and graduated at the age of 16 from Roane County High School. He joined the Air Force at that time and traveled to many parts of the world. He was stationed in South Korea and later in Homestead, Florida, and worked as an aircraft mechanic. After his service, he then returned to West Virginia and lived in the Charleston/Sissonville area for the remainder of his life.
Bill married the love-of-his-life, Priscilla Florence Layne Painter of Charleston, West Virginia, in 1964. They were married for 59 years until Priscilla’s recent death on February 23, 2024. Bill and Priscilla brought two daughters into the world: Dr. Angela Dawn Painter Omer who is married to Dr. Aziz Syed Omer, and who resides in Morganton, North Carolina; and Melody Elizabeth Painter Robinson who is married to A.P. Robinson, Jr., and who resides in Lutz, Florida. Bill and Priscilla had one grandson, Ernest Kenney Gibson III, who resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Bill is survived by his dear siblings, brother Jack Painter (Della) of Cross Lanes, WV, sister Carol Painter Hay Anderson of Charleston, WV, and Judy Joan Painter Harris (Pat) of Myrtle Beach, SC. Bill was preceded in death by brothers David Painter, James “JD” Painter and Gary “Bunny” Painter. Bill also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends with whom he had many cherished memories.
Bill was employed at Columbia Gas/ Mountaineer Gas Company for 40 years and was the best, most hardworking and dedicated employee that they ever had. He was given the nickname of “Bull” at his workplace due to his strength and determination in always pushing through hard jobs and doing things the right way rather than the easy way. Bill also created and ran his own business, B.G. Painter & Company, providing heavy equipment and excavation services to many people throughout the Charleston area.
Bill was the epitome of a strong work ethic, wisdom, honesty, integrity, dignity and reliability, along with a good sense of humor. He was a Christian man who loved God. He was an outstanding husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, brother, uncle and provider who led by example and loved his family. He was always readily available to his family and loved ones to lend a helping hand with anything that was needed. Bill’s main focus was his family and work, but in his spare time, he enjoyed watching and attending NASCAR races, reading news/current events and going out to eat with loved ones. He also loved Priscilla’s delectable country cooking. Dad/PawPaw taught us so many important lessons in life that we will carry with us forever.
To our dear Dad/PawPaw – we are eternally grateful to have experienced so many special moments in time with you. Our memories are filled with all of the precious times we spent together. Thank you for your love and dedication to us. Thank you for teaching us how to swim, riding rafts in the ocean with us and always joking with us. We are lost without you. You will always be painfully missed until we all meet again. We love you with everything in our broken hearts and will never stop thinking about how much you mean to us and how you have impacted our lives so strongly. In our minds and hearts, we will always be together. We honor you and the man that you were, that you always will be and the legacy that you have left behind. You were an inspiring role model and you definitely made the world a better place. We look forward to the day that we can all meet once again.
