Serge was born in Montreal Quebec, Canada on New Year’s Day 1951 to Rolande Dionne Morency and Claude Morency. His family immigrated to California when he was 9. He became a carpenter and built a life for his family with his hands. He married the love of his life, Ismene in 1974 who has ever since been his dearest friend, staying by his side unwaveringly, persevering in love through sickness and in health. Their 50th wedding anniversary was to be celebrated this September.
Although Serge was baptized as an infant into the Catholic Church he spent his life seeking answers to deep spiritual questions. After many years of exploration he returned home to find peace with Christ in the Catholic Church and he was confirmed in 2016. Serge formed many strong bonds of friendship in his church and neighborhood community. He was a poet, an artist, a craftsman, and a wordsmith, always finding the humor in ordinary life. He would often joke that he wanted circus music played during his funeral - this wish has since been vetoed by his family. He had a poetic soul penning many penetrating and meaningful poems. He loved watching movies, doing carpentry projects around the house, and sharing long, deep conversations. All of us believe he drew his truest joys from playing with his grandchildren and ministering to his family. Even outside his family, justice would inspire him. In his later years he strove to speak for those who didn’t have a voice as a certified guardian ad litem.
A complement from Serge was the most honest and affirming endorsement one could enjoy in life.
He is survived by and continues to inspire his wife Ismene Morency; their four children: Amy Morency Miller, Leah Morency Majesky, Dana Morency Wimmers, Dennis Morency; his ten grandchildren; his three siblings: Danielle Shillcock, Jocelyne Morency Sade, Christian Morency; and his six sisters-in-law.
Serge will be laid to rest in North Carolina. Visitation will take place at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe on Wednesday the 8th of May from 6-8pm. Funeral Mass will take place the following morning at the chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Monroe at 11am. His burial will immediately follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews.
