Steven Dennis Kohlert passed away on April 29, 2024. Born in 1939, Steve was known for his leadership, good humor, integrity, and above all he wanted to be like the Savior. Steve always looked out for those in need or those whom others overlooked. This was a heritage from his parents George Bross and Ruth Webb Kohlert.
Raised in Salt Lake, he graduated from Olympus High in 1957 where he was student body president. This is where the lifelong friendship and love began with his wife Nance Merrill. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1961, and she was always by his side thereafter. They found joy in walking, reading, discussing, traveling, and attending ballgames (especially of their grandchildren.) They have four children,10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Steve completed a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Utah and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
The family lived in Boston, northern and southern California, and Washington D.C., returning to Salt Lake in 1973. Steve worked for Hewlett-Packard, Hughes Tool, and was Vice President of DEI, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Health Education & Welfare, and Senior Vice President of Intermountain Healthcare.
Steve donated a great deal of his time within the community. He served as Board Chairman of United Way for two terms (initiating the first Day of Caring.) He was on the Board of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. Along with Bishop Niederauer of the Catholic Diocese, he founded the Utah Citizens Against Pornography. He served on the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable during the 2002 Olympics and served 7 years thereafter. He took great satisfaction in working through people and bringing groups together to accomplish worthwhile tasks.
Steve was given many opportunities for leadership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was 2nd Counselor to his Mission President Ralph Hill in the Texas Mission. He was a Bishop in California and at the University of Utah where he also served as a Stake President. He served as President of the Ohio Cleveland Mission and of the Provo MTC. He and Nance also served a mission in New York City and Sydney, Australia. He is an ordained Patriarch. He loved teaching in Church callings and in Institute classes. Steve was known for his ability to involve others in thoughtful discussions as he taught. He found great joy in serving as a sealer in the Salt Lake and Jordan River Temples.
Steve built close relationships among those with whom he worked, or he mentored in business, community, or Church settings. He adored his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. More than anything else, he wanted to bring his family Home with him.
He is survived by his loving wife Nance Kohlert, and children Kelly, Dan, Amy and Mary (Bill Kimball), 10 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Webb Kohlert, his father, George Bross Kohlert, and his brother George Charles Kohlert.
