Obituary of Bernice Smythers Maddox
Lorene Bernice Smythers Maddox, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away on May 1, 2024, at the age of 86. She was born in Carroll County, Virginia, on August 6, 1937, to Vinton Curtis Smythers and Oza Rae Gravley Smythers. Lorene was the loving wife of Ray O Maddox for 61 years and was the cornerstone of her family. Bernice was the cherished mother of Mark Maddox and Kelly Park (Philip). She was a proud grandmother to Nicole Park (Choi Hyun Myung) and Lauren Park. Bernice was also the dear sister of Elvin, Gloria, Wanda, Carolyn, Susan, Karen, and was preceded in death by her sister Joyce and brothers Gene, Duane, and David. Bernice's life was filled with love for her family and friends. She found joy in caring for those around her and embraced traditional values. Bernice's warmth and dedication made her a wonderful homemaker and nurturer to her loved ones. In her early years, Bernice graduated from Woodlawn High School in Carroll County, Virginia. She served as a Secretary at Craddock-Terry Shoe Corporation and watched over children before and after school, later working in the lunchroom at Sandusky Middle School. Bernice also worked as a bookkeeper for G A Hartless Enterprises and as an Office Administrator at Sandrof Auto Body. Bernice was a faithful member of Fairview Christian Church, where she actively aided weekly community meals and was involved in Men's Christian Fellowship Youth Camp known as "Church Farm." She further extended her kindness to the community by volunteering with Meals On Wheels. Funeral services to celebrate Bernice's life will be held at Fairview Christian Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, on May 7, 2024, at 12:00 pm, with visitation starting at 11:00 am.
