1926 - 2024
Joan, pronounced Joann, was born January 2, 1926 in Mattoon, Illinois to Carus S. Icenogle and Lois Cromer Icenogle. After high school she attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. Later in life she returned to college at the Univ. of Missouri, St. Louis, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a double major in history and art history and was a member of Phi Alpha Theta History honor society.
She married John F. Matherly in Mattoon, Illinois and moved to Denver in 1950 with their 2 young children (John C. and Julie). They moved to Longmont in 1955. John's career took them in 1962 to Monett, Mo., then Cincinnati, Ohio and St. Louis, Mo. He was president of Vaisey-Bristol Shoe and a corporate vice-pres. of U.S. Shoe Co. Their 3rd child, Jason, was born in Cincinnati. They returned to Longmont in retirement in 1984.
Joan was very active in Longmont's Little Theatre before it became Potpourri. She was a sales director for Mary Kay cosmetics for nine years.
She took 4 years to write a book of the life of Queen Isabella of Spain titled "A Thing Most Marvelous". She loved history! Joan and John loved traveling to Europe eleven times. She enjoyed playing in a bridge group for many years. Joan also started a Red Hat group in the early 90's.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband John in 2015, her parents, and brother Stan. She leaves son John (Marbie) of Westminster, Co., daughter Julie Baird ( Frank) of Reno, Nv., and son Jason of Cherry Hills, Co. Also, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
