Jacqueline J. Hartley, 82, of Longs, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on Monday, April 29th. She was born on November 6, 1941, to the late Joseph “Ernest” and Nola (Johnson) Duprez in Sanford, ME. Commonly known as “Jackie”, she grew up in Sanford attending local schools and graduated from Sanford High School.
In 1959, she married Joseph “Billy” Melanson and together they raised two sons, later moving to Wells, ME. Jackie and Billy loved spending time on Loon Pond with the beloved Laurendeau clan, a family whom she cherished dearly even after Billy passed away in 1982.
She worked at the local shoe shop, ComputerVision and Farm Bureau Insurance, where she met her second husband, Marvin “Skip” Hartley. Jackie and Skip moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1998, where they married and resided until moving to Longs, SC in 2019. They embraced the warm southern weather, loved to travel and returned to Maine each summer to enjoy a famous Flo’s hot dog and lobsters and steamers at the beach with family.
Jackie was up for any adventure and even got her first tattoo (a butterfly) with her granddaughter at the age of 65. She had a deep love for purses and shoes and very much enjoyed shopping with her sister-in-law, Nancy Duprez.
She was an avid knitter, and her family will forever treasure her handmade keepsakes “made with lots of love”, as she liked to say. Jackie also knitted blankets and hats for hospital babies and cancer patients as well as mittens for the homeless. She took great pride in her work and loved seeing how happy it made everyone.
She was strong in faith and family and will be deeply missed.
Jacqueline was predeceased by her parents Ernest and Nola Duprez, husbands Billy Melanson and Skip Hartley, son Brian Melanson, brother Robert Duprez, his wife Sandra, and niece, Christine Duprez.
She is survived by son Mark Melanson and his wife Laurie of Alfred, ME, brother Michael Duprez and wife Nancy of Longs, SC, stepsons Sky Hartley of Damariscotta, ME, Paul Hartley and wife Meghann of Beaverton, OR; granddaughters, Maria Rungi and husband Matthew of Vienna, ME, Tiffany Stackpole and husband Cody of Alfred, ME, and Brittni Hartley of Damariscotta, ME; grandsons Cody Hartley of Damariscotta, ME, Griffin and Caden Hartley of Beaverton, OR; great grandchildren Mya, Vincent and Nolan; niece Pamela Sylvain and husband Gregory of Bedford, NH; and cousin Florence Sherman of Gilford, NH, whom was like a sister to her.
