John R. (Dick) Hinkle, age 97, of Johnstown, Colorado passed away on Monday, May 29, 2023 at Banner Health in Greely, Colorado. He was born April 16, 1926 and was the third out of ten children born to John and Lydia Hinkle in Lincoln, Nebraska.
After high school, John was drafted into the Army during World War II. He served two years and re-enlisted for another year. After his tour ended, he returned home and worked at the Capital Hotel where he met Pauline Fox. They married in 1948 and had three daughters; Carol, Janet, and Kathy. He worked for AT&T at Western Electric in Omaha and moved his family to LaVista in 1959. In 1964 they moved to Millard and lived there until retirement in 1982. Then they moved to Forsyth, Missouri, where he served as Commander of VFW Post #5168 for several years.
John and Pauline bought a fifth wheel camper and enjoyed camping during the winter months in southern Texas for several years. He loved to play cards and played with family every chance he got. He loved watching baseball and playing on his iPad doing puzzles. In 2017, he moved to Johnstown, Colorado where he lived with his daughter, Kathy, and son-in-law, Gary Redel. He also loved traveling to southern Florida and Arizona. In 2019, he took a trip to Hawaii and visited Pearl Harbor.
John is survived by his daughters Carol DeLong and Kathy (Gary) Redel; three grandchildren, Kelly Bennett, Kevin DeLong, Weston Redel; and one great grandson, Cooper Bennett; sisters, Marie Reinhardt, Ruth Schwabauer, Margaret Morrow, Alberta Snyder, Louise Grote; and brother, Kenneth (Mary) Hinkle. He is preceded in death by parents John and Lydia Hinkle; wife Pauline; daughter Janet Hinkle-Sautter; sister Magdelena (Jo) Pearson; and brothers Eugene and Henry (Jim).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Disabled Veterans Association. Burial will be held at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6700 S. 14th Street, Lincoln, NE on May 7, 2024 at 10:30 am.
