Donald G. Prater, age 84, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. He was born on April 7, 1940, to parents Don and Louise. Don graduated from Bearden High School in 1958 and later earned a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee.
He served in the Air Force from 1960 to 1964, dedicating four years to his country during a critical time in history. For 35 years, Don worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (X-10) starting in the Instrument and Control Division, where he eventually retired as the Operations Manager.
Don had a lifelong passion for ham radio, building his first transmitter at an early age and operating from the top of Bearden Hill. He was an active member of the East Tennessee DX Association and received many awards for establishing countless contacts on all bands and modes across the globe generating a vast number of friendships along the way. His commitment to his hobbies was matched by his dedication to the Chota Masonic Lodge, where he was a member for over 50 years. Don was a member of Central Baptist Church in Bearden, and was actively involved in the community in Farragut.
He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Opal; son, Don (Julie); daughter, Lori (Ulf); step-daughter, Pam (Mike); grandchildren, Katherine, Christine, Julianna, Gabriella and Isabella; aunt, Jewell (Malcolm).
A visitation for Don will be held Saturday, October 12, 2024 from 10:00am to 12:00pm at Berry Highland Memorial, 5315 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee 37919. A masonic funeral service will follow at 12:00pm. Family and friends will gather at 1:00pm in Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery for a graveside service with presentation of Military Honors.
