Randy was born on November 26, 1953, in Ellsworth, Kansas. He graduated from Sylvan Grove High School in 1972. While in school, he participated in the high school choir and football.
He was as simple a man as they come. He didn’t like ties or collared shirts. He loved wearing old jeans with a pocketed shirt with suspenders or overalls. He was no frills, nothing fancy.
He loved faithful friends and enjoyed hanging out with them, listening to music, or playing Farkle at the local bar. He also loved watching his favorite football teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and K-State Wildcats, with family and friends. He was thrilled when the Kansas City Chiefs won three Super Bowls in the last five years.
He was proud of his family and often bragged about them to his friends. He frequently talked about his brother, Marc, and his hard work and how he wore many hats in their hometown of Sylvan Grove, Kansas. He was proud of his nieces and nephews, Christina, Andrea, and Bryant, and their accomplishments.
During the spring and summer seasons, Randy was often outside tending to his garden. He loved to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, jalapeño peppers, green peppers, anything he could get to grow. Whatever he grew, he was happy to share with his family and friends.
Randy married Sue (Jolliff) Edwards Ferguson on June 29, 1996. Their marriage included three daughters: Angie, Nikki, and Yvonne. They considered him their dad because he was there more often than their own father. Soon after, his daughters added seven grandchildren, which he was also very proud of. He attended numerous games, school concerts and programs, roller derby matches, and birthday parties.
During Sue’s eight-years of health issues, many of them crises, Randy was a devoted husband who cared for her during those repeatedly stressful times.
He grew up in a small town, often working on neighbors’ farms. While working on the various farms around town, he learned the biggest life lesson to work hard at anything you do. As an adult, he worked at many jobs, including the U.S. Corps of Engineers and the Jackson County Parks and Rec. He was a skilled tradesman who worked very demanding physical work. He loved to work but had to stop working in his mid-50s due to a physical condition. He still tinkered as best he could. If he needed to fix something, he would figure out a way to do it. He was a master at rigging together a “fix” for anything.
He had a sharp mind and knew current events, from politics to the newest Hollywood scandal. He loved to watch The Bachelor and would text Yvonne about his preferences for the bachelorettes he liked. He loved to do word searches, watch game shows, and watch RFDtv. Country music was his favorite, and it could be heard blasting in his home when he wasn’t wrapped up in a new Hollywood scandal!
He was often described as a good guy; one you could rely on in a pinch. He would drop anything to help a friend or family member. He was the type to give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lorna and Glenn (Bud) Lovin, and his wife, Sue Stroemer.
He leaves a hole in his family’s hearts, including his brothers, Marc (Coleen) Lovin of Sylvan Grove, KS, and Todd (Carole) Lovin of St. George, KS; his daughters, Angela (Shawn) Cowing of Overland Park, KS, Nikki Weaver of Shawnee, KS, and Yvonne Edwards (Jason Arsee) of Lee’s Summit, MO. He also leaves a son, Rick Stroemer; his grandchildren Jenna Edwards (Nick Perez), Justin Weaver, Jacob Weaver, Autumn Edwards, Lianne Rothberg, Harper, and Alex Cowing; great-grandson, Colson Perez; and a great-grandson on the way; nieces and nephews Christina Thibault (Travis) and their children, Andrea Michael (Jason) and their children, and Bryant (Jamie) and their children, Jarrod Lovin (and fiancé), Tate Lovin, and numerous other family members. He leaves his faithful dog, Conner, but will
reunite with his dogs, Roxie and Frankie, in heaven.
Randy’s family would like to thank Dr. Chapman and his staff at Clay-Platte Family Practice. They cared for Randy for many years. A special thanks goes to his roommate, Robert McGregor. His daughters very much appreciate his help.
If attending Randy’s services, please wear red and/or gold or a Chiefs shirt, purple and/or a K-State shirt, or suspenders in Randy’s memory. Nothing fancy.
The family requests donations to the KC Pet Project (donate.kcpetproject.org) instead of flowers in Randy’s memory.
A visitation for Randy will be held Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131. A celebration of life will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Mount Moriah Cemetery South.
