Leandro "Joe" Cortez of Kansas City, Kansas passed away on April 28, 2024 at Villa St. Francis in Olathe, Kansas. Leandro was born to Francisca Morales and Leandro Cortez Sr. in Detroit, Michigan on July 28, 1926.
He was married to Emilie (Reyes) Cortez for 54 years who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Dolores Cortez, Mariano Cortez, Sebastian Cortez, Antonia Gallardo and Mariano Morales.
He is survived by daughter Pattie Buckner, granddaughter Andrea Ashley-Dorado and grandson Rodney Ashley Jr "RJ". He is also survived by 6 great grandchildren, Elyse, Wyatt, Irene, Emilie, Emery, and Camille.
In 1953, Leandro was on his way to move to Chicago and fate would lead him to stay and reside in Kansas City, Missouri. Leandro retired from Sealright and worked part time as a custodian at St. Patrick's Grade School. Leandro would often say working at St. Patricks was his “best job” as he enjoyed interacting with the teachers and students there. Leandro loved watching football, baseball and tennis. He was a longtime fan of the Colts, Royals and Yankees. He also loved fishing, dancing, listening to music and going to dances with his wife Emilie. Leandro also enjoyed cooking and would often receive many requests to make his homemade salsa and enchiladas. Leandro was a funny, caring, and generous person who left a lasting impression on those he met. His life revolved around his grandchildren and great grandchildren as they always brought a smile to his face. His love and devotion was never ending. He had an immense love for God and prayed every day. Leandro was loved by the staff at Villa St. Francis and was known as the “General” or “Papa” by many. He was loved by many and will be missed.
