Milton Carl Goodie, lovingly known as "Japo" or "Goodie", was born December 5, 1951, to Milton John and Christine Goodie, Jr. He was the second of eight siblings and the eldest son. He attended mass regularly and served as an altar boy at St. Monica's Catholic Church. As a child, Milton was known to be very mischievous and always getting into something. During his childhood and into his teenage years, he learned the value of hard work by helping with the family garden and tending to pigs, cows, and chickens. He also learned the family skill from his grandfather, father, and uncles of being able to repair anything with a motor. He received an athletic scholarship to St. Pius Catholic School where he played basketball and football, breaking the school record for rushing yards.
As a young man, Milton quickly mastered operating heavy machinery. His expertise led him to start his own contracting business in the construction industry after rebuilding an old dump truck frame with his father. As he acquired more equipment, his business grew steadily. His passion for operating was evident in every job he undertook, approaching each task with skill, safety, and profound knowledge of his trade. It brought him immense joy to bring his children, grandchildren, and great-grandson to ride on a bulldozer. Milton was very proud that he was able to continue operating heavy machines throughout chemotherapy and after multiple surgeries. He continued to work for over 50 years, until his death.
In 1970, he met Roma Jan McElroy, his wife and mother of his children. From their union, they raised three children, Lady, Milton Carl IV "Chico" and Timothy "Cisco". He exemplified love and generosity as a father, while emphasizing the value of hard work and respect.
Milton had a dynamic personality! Although short in stature, his personality was larger than life. As he would often say "Dynamite comes in small packages!" Those words described him perfectly. He loved getting a reaction and making people laugh through jokes and talking about his life. He had his own special way of retelling stories based on how he remembered it. Those who loved him learned to just go with it. You could never win an argument with him.
He was a reliable source of strength for his family and friends offering guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support through life's ups and downs. His legacy of generosity will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Milton was a giving man who enjoyed helping others. He was widely known in his beloved community of Acres Home where he made many friends. He frequently shared food, clothing, or any item that could be of use to someone else. He was truly an example of what it means to give back to the community.
Milton had a unique testimony and he loved sharing it with anyone who would listen. After surviving two nearly fatal accidents and beating stage III colon cancer, he would profess proudly that God wasn't done with him yet. Even as he faced his greatest battles, his faith never wavered and he never gave up his fight to continue his life. He was a testament of walking by faith and not by sight.
On April 27th, 2024, Milton was called home to rest. Awaiting him at heaven's gates are his parents, Milton and Christine Goodie, Jr., and siblings, Donald, Grace, and Paul Goodie.
Left to cherish his memory are Roma Jan Goodie, his only daughter, Lady Barrs (Nathaniel), sons, Milton Carl IV and Timothy Matthew Goodie; siblings, Cynthia Jones, Rosalind McKinney, Howard Goodie, and Richard Goodie; grandchildren, Destiny Fonteno (Keiland), Milton Carl Goodie V, Micah Lovelady and Timothy Goodie, Jr; great-grandchildren, Kai and Kali Fonteno; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit lives on in the memories he created, the projects he completed, and the lives he touched. His legacy of hard work, dedication, and kindness will forever be remembered and cherished.
Milton's visitation service will be held on May 11, 2024 at Paradise Funeral Home Chapel at 5:30 p.m. Funeral services will immediately follow at 6:30 p.m.
