Michael Gary Contreras, a 73-year-old resident of Houston, TX, passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning on April 27, 2024. He was born on April 24, 1951, to Bernand Sr. and Adelina Contreras. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his older brothers Robert, Bernard, and Richard, and his grandson Joseph Garza. Michael served his country with pride as a member of the Navy on one of the first nuclear-powered submarines and was honorably discharged. After his military service, he worked for the United States Postal Service until his retirement.
Throughout his life, Michael was dedicated to serving his community and fellow Veterans at the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). He held several positions within the Houston VWF District 8790, including Quartermaster, Gold Legacy Member, and District Commander. Michael was known for his willingness to help any Veteran in need and was loved and respected by many.
Michael enjoyed traveling with his wife, Maribel Contreras, whom he had been married to for 26 years. He loved Maribel's children as his own and was loved by them in return. Michael was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Maribel Contreras, his children Michael Gary Contreras Jr, Melissa Contreras, and Kimberly Garza, his brother Roland Contreras, and his sister Diane Rodriguez Contreras. The Contreras family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the tremendous support and condolences they have received.
A visitation for Michael will be held Tuesday, May 14, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at American Heritage Funeral Home, 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, May 14, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038. A committal with military honors will occur Tuesday, May 14, 2024 from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038.
