Marvel McDaniel Galloway was a beautiful soul who lived life with a vibrant energy and a joyful spirit. She left this world at the age of 90, on Wednesday, the 24th of April 2024, after a fifteen year-long illness. She accepted her illness with dignity and grace, touching the hearts of all who knew her.
Born on the 26th of August 1933, in Houston, Marvel was raised by her parents, Morris and Nell Frank. She attended San Jacinto High School and University of Texas, graduating with a degree in Fine Arts.
She married her childhood friend and sweetheart, Donald Hugh “Duck” Galloway in 1955 at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston. They had a long 67- year marriage which was full of joy, humor, love, and respect.
Throughout her life, Marvel had pursued many interests. In the 1960’s she was a teacher at St. Mark’s Episcopal School. In the 1970’s she was one of the founding artists of “The Garden Artists”, who together sold their artwork in Houston. This led to Marvel and Duck opening their shop, “The Framery and Art Gallery” where they sold art, antiques, and gifts. After selling “The Framery,” she and Duck enjoyed Texas football, playing bridge, family events, and traveling.
Along with her love of art and antiques, Marvel had a passion for decorating and entertaining. She loved hosting her family and her friends from the “Uptown Swells” to the “Garden Artists,” to her Alpha Delta Pi sorority group, and the “Memorial Woman’s Club of Houston.”
Marvel’s love for her three children, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren knew no bounds. She cherished her role as Mother, Aunt, Grammy and Great-Gram.
She is survived by her beloved children Shannon Galloway Doty, Shelly Galloway Porter, and Hollis Hugh “Chip” Galloway; also survived by her grandchildren Hollis Dalton Galloway, Kristen Doty Dulaney, Richard Willard Porter Jr., Allison Kirby Galloway, Travis Varner Doty, Rae Doty, great-grandchildren Audrey Grace Galloway and Henry James Porter, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald Hugh “Duck” Galloway and older brother, Fred McDaniel.
The Galloway family wishes to express their appreciation of two important people, Duck’s cousin, Susan Jones, and Marvel’s life-long friend, Gayle Bowyer. Both have been a blessing to Marvel and the family especially during recent years.
The family also extends their heartfelt appreciation to the caregivers who brought brightness to Marvel’s days: Maria Ramirez, Gaby Valdez, and Roxy Trejillo.
Marvel will be remembered by her family as a graceful and joyous presence, always with a smile, a kind word, and a ready shoulder to lean on. She will live on in our hearts forever.
A memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning, on Friday, the 10th of May, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston where The Rev. Lisa R. Neilson, Vicar for Pastoral Care is to officiate.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the adjacent Bagby Parish Hall.
