2 Timothy 4:7-8 KJV
[7] I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: [8] henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
Bernard’s Legacy
Bernard Steward, the fifth of seven children was born December 25, 1948 to the late Thomas T. Steward and Brunetta Williams Steward.
Bernard accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Residence Baptist Church. He later joined New Rising Sun Baptist Church where he faithfully served on the Deacon Board for many years. He would joyfully conduct the offertory period and could be seen every Sunday on the front pew enjoying songs by the choir and a mighty word from his beloved pastor.
Bernard was a 1966 graduate of Southdown High. During his college years at Southern University in Baton Rouge he was drafted into the United States Army and proudly fought for our country in the Vietnam War. Afterward, he returned to college and received a bachelor's degree in physical education. He retired from Union Carbide chemical plant where he served as a lab technician.
Bernard never met a stranger and loved to talk to everyone! You could often find him gardening and tending to his thriving plants or at his stove cooking a delicious meal. He had a kind spirit, enjoyed time with his family and friends, and loved watching the Saints and Pelicans play. He also enjoyed listening to music and was even a disc jockey in his younger years along with his friends. Bernard selflessly volunteered at Southdown School and was instrumental in rebuilding the school and declaring it as a historic site.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents, Thomas and Brunetta Steward, brother Cladell Outley, and sister, Claudette Steward Smith.
To cherish his memories he leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Alma Coit Steward; Daughters-- Yolanda Steward of Houston, TX, Kaina Steward of Houma, LA, and Dovie (Jordan) Steward-Olusegun of Arlington, TX; Brothers-- Calvin Steward, Sr. of Chicago, IL, and James and Beverly Steward, both of Houma, LA.; Sisters-- Devoria Steward Williams and Loretta (David) Steward, both of Houma, LA.; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and two granddogs; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, classmates, and friends.
Bernard was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who would move heaven and earth for his family. He will be sadly missed by his church family, community, and beyond.
